Comments: I graduated from Forrest City High School in 1990. The prom was still segregated at that time. However, I come to realize that changing the name will not change the mindset of people. Yes it would be honorable to change the name. But the focus should be about educating people on the history behind these things and that will enlighten. This nation was not founded on equality. It has been racist from the begining. Therefore I am not shocked that this name has been allowed to stand all this time. Because you can bet that your local leader know exactly what the name stands for.

Comments: Maybe people should remember that this is part of our heritage. The name of the school has nothing to do with racism . The name also does not matter in the education the children are getting. Also there are conflicting reports as to what happened at Fort Pillow, some reports say that the Union soldiers surrendered, others say that they would not and that as they were fleeing they were turning to fire at the confederate troops . Now I dont know about you but it is my belief that if someone is firing at me in war ,they should be fired upon. Can we all just remember that schools are named after historical figures and that maybe we should try to change the way people think about our heritage rather than trying to tear down the heritage of the south.

Comments: Good lord people. Learn how to open a book and read. Any idiot could see that half the things that Forrest is being accused of are false! He was exonerated from haveing anything to do with the KKK or the Fort Pillow Massacre. And he owned slaves before the war. The important thing to look at it AFTER the war. when he was the FIRST white man invited to be a key note speaker at the Pole Bearers COnvention (now the NAACP) Not only that, he gave many African Americans jobs as engineers and architects, and it was absolutely unheard of for these jobs to be held by blacks in the north....if anything we should be praising this man for reaching out to help the blacks in the civil war era. with that in mind, i hope all of you that are blindly accusing this man of being a racist now see the error in your ways. And if you still think that you are right, know that this man is probably ten times better than what you will ever ammount to.

Comments: This is an "F" school. There are more important things than the name. This petition has incorrect information and should not be allowed. Yes, there was a massacre at Fort Pillow and many other places in the South. IT WAS A WAR, HELLOOOOOO. The School Board did not name it for the desegregation ruling, it was the United Daughters of the Confederacy who suggested the name after Congress (and the State of Florida) designated a time period to remember and celebrate the Civil War. Read your history books folks, Forrest was a hero to the black people of the 1860's. He was the first white man to start a business (a railroad no less) to advance the education and employability of the freed slaves. Who sold the Africans into slavery It was their African brethren. I would be ashamed to be called an African-American after what those ancestors did. BTW: Martin Luther King, Jr. was an adulterer yet we have streets named after him. What's up with that

Comments: I found it outrageous that this school, among many others, continues to honor the name of a person who did such dishonor to others. While children are taught history in school, and this is thought to be one of the most fundamental contributions to their education, the history of their school should not suggest that any child is unwelcome. For the city of Jacksonville, county of Duval, and state of Florida to continue to ignore this issue is a true disservice to students everywhere.

Comments: It´s a shame in the 21st Century the KKK is allowed to exist under the disguise of social democracy in a country like America. The history depicts an organization founded on racism and domestic terrorism. Goes to confirm, terrorism is home grown and still protected.

Comments: Who ever did the above research on Nathan Forrest needs to go BACK TO SCHOOL! Did you know that as soon as the KKK started doing repulsive acts on African Americans, Nathan B. Forrest withdrew!! And He earned his millions by buying land and planting tobacco way before he was a member of the KKK! A majority of the schools in Jacksonville Fl. are named after Civil War Leaders..are you going to change the others schools names as well Use the tax payers money for something more worth while, like security needed for these "F" schools!!!

Comments: If one takes time to read the reports given by those that were present at Fort Pillow, there seems to be plenty testimony that the Black soldiers were murdered after they had been captured by the Confederate forces. Forrest knew this and only stopped it after they had almost wiped out the Black soldiers according to some of the reports. It strongly suggest he is not the person to name a school or anything else after. His name should be taken off of any public school or facility.
