Make sense in Manatee County. Our Manatee County officials and the department of Manatee County Animal Services have taken far too long to create a no kill county. Talks about this began in 2008. The animals in our county deserve better, they deserve a chance, they deserve to live. We are petitioning for change. The policies of this county must be changed in order to be a no kill community right now, not in the future. We need a commitment to spend county funding wisely on adoptions, behavior rehabilitation and veterinary care, saving animal lives. Manatee County Animal Services charges local rescue groups $15 to 'pull' an animal stating that they now vaccinate every animal that enters the facility. When rescue groups take an animal from them, it creates space for another animal to get moved along to adoption. It makes sense that it should be of no charge to rescue groups. In December, 2010 alone, 82 dogs and 58 cats were killed. Those numbers are unacceptable to the animal lovers and citizens of Manatee County. Be compassionate Manatee County. Let's do what is right for the animals. Let's promise to work together for animals to save lives and make Manatee County a place where we take responsibility for and love our animals. This petition will be presented at a county commission meeting.

We, the undersigned, demand that Manatee County become a no-kill animal shelter county. We demand that the animal services department change the policies immediately and cease killing adoptable, treatable animals, young and old. The word 'euthanasia' is not the correct word to use in these instances as it literally means 'good death'. Death for any healthy animal is not good.

This petition is calling for the following:

Establish theManatee County Animal Service'sprimary role as saving the lives of animals.
Makeit illegal for a shelter to kill an animal if a rescue group or No Kill shelter is willing to save that animal.
Mandate that animal control be open seven days per week for adoption.
RequireManatee County AnimalServicesto be truthful about how many animals they kill and adopt.
Establish adefinition of No Kill that includes all savable animals including feral cats.
Puppies and kittens unweaned will not be killed and will be kept with their mothers if at all possible to produce healthy animals.
Enlist volunteers to help with staffing of the Animal Services building and any offshoot adoption buildings.
To offer and provide low cost or free spay and neuter services.
To cease immediately charging rescue groups money to pull animals from the facility.

We believe that Manatee County has the ability and the will to change. We can no longer accept using our tax dollars to kill innocent, healthy animals.

Thank you for your concern and efforts for our animals.
