The petition
We welcome the Hong Kong SAR Government's decision to stop junk fax and junk SMS and call upon it to do the same for junk mail.
Junk mail is not just a nuisance; it contributes to deforestation by consuming vast amounts of paper and is therefore a direct contributor to global warming, and it just goes to waste because people just throw them away.
Hongkong Post has successfully adapted to the advent of the Internet by diversifying into courier services and we trust that it can continue to develop new, profitable services without relying on junk mail. We therefore ask that junk mail be EXCLUDED from any consideration of its revenue stream.
Should the government consider it necessary to leave marketers room for their activities, we would like to suggest that they be required to send junk mail to named recipients only and to cease doing so as soon as requests to stop sending such mail are received.
The Hong Kong SAR Government has stated its commitment to sustainable development and has responded to London mayor Ken Livingston's invitation to become a member of the C40 Large Cities Climate Leadership Group. We hope it will demonstrate its leadership by taking measures to stop junk mail in the city.
