February 22, 2008 To: Mayor Miller and the Toronto City Council, Toronto, Ontario, Canada As residents of Toronto we respectfully suggest that you cancel immediately the new Giant Bluebin program and the coming Giant Garbagebin program. 1) The new Giant Bluebins accomplish nothing. The same stuff ends up in the truck. 2) There is no labour savings as two workers are still needed on the trucks. 3) The bins are too big. Even the smallest one is too high to put under a standard 36 inch Toronto porch, and many people don\'t have porches anyway. 4) They are too heavy. Just because you have a big family doesn\'t mean you are a big person. And stairs Forget about stairs. 5) They are too unwieldy. How are they going to get from curb to truck on streets where cars are parked nose to tail and there are no driveways. And winter, with snowbanks Another joke. We hope you have really strong garbage workers. 6) They are just plain ugly. And there is no place to hide them or store them. Toronto the beautiful 7) They make no provision for week to week variations in the amount of material. People don\'t produce 1.5 bags of garbage every week. Some weeks they produce 1.5, some weeks six. 8) The proposed cost of the Garbagebins is unfair, for the same reason as 7) above. And who is kidding who anyway A hidden tax is still a tax. Perhaps a non transferrable token system, so the more bags you put out, the more you pay, instead of having to guess. Or some other form of fair user pay method would make sense. 9) If soggy newspapers are a problem for the blue/grey bin workers (too heavy) then just put top lids on a container the size of the old grey boxes and use it for papers etc. To be clear: All of us are pro recycling and will do our best to help the city reach its goal in this regard. But these methods of getting recyclables and garbage from our places of residence to the actual trucks is just plain stupid. We resolve: 1) To, in the next municipal election, vote against every elected official who doesn\'t make an attempt to solve this problem. 2) To organize a massive civic protest where we bring all of our bluebin/greybin material and all of our garbage to Nathan Phillips square and leave it there, unless elected officials put this issue back on the table with all due speed. Sincerely, The undersigned
