Flavored milk is currently the most common type of milk consumed through the federal school meal system. This milk has 28 grams of sugar in it (12g are natural sugar in the form of lactose) but the rest, 16g, is added sugar, which you don't get in regular milk. Children in this district are offered this sugary option at breakfast and lunch, and even ONE 8oz carton is equivalent to the amount of added sugar they should consume in the WHOLE DAY. This, together with other sugary items like most cereals, cookies sold at snack shops on school premises and many breads and desserts, mean that many children are consuming way over their allocation of added sugar each and every day, levels that the American Heart Association and the World Health Organization say are dangerous and in time can lead to such devastating chronic illnesses such as Type 2 Diabetes. America is now diagnosing this disease in children as young as 8 and this needs to stop! We have to limit the amount of added sugar in our children's diets. If we don't, it will adversely affect their health and well being for the rest of their lives. Let's help our kids learn good food values!
