We, the undersigned, are opposed to the construction of a
coal gasification refinery and power plant on the Back River.
This heavy industrial plant
would:
Release 22 lbs of
mercury into the air every year. Mercury is a dangerous neurotoxin that
is particularly harmful to pregnant women and children.
Bring a minimum of
five coal barges up the Sheepscot
and Back Rivers each week. These
barges are likely to be 400 feet long and accompanied by an 80Õ tug. Lobstermen say they would completely
destroy their ability to fish these waters.
Be part of the
Wiscasset landscape for the next 40-50 years.
Threaten the health of our citizens, our children, our grandchildren and
our environment.
Release 5 million
tons of carbon dioxide into our air, doubling the global warming greenhouse gas emissions for
energy in Maine.
We believe a heavy industry
like a coal power plant/refinery is not compatible with the vision of the
mid-coast region and of the village of Wiscasset and not compatible with the
long-term economic and environmental health of our community.
We believe the region has not had the time to adequately review
the proposal and create necessary measures that will protect its citizens from
excessive noise and odor, piles of coal, chemicals and many other dangers that
could come with this proposal. We
are left with the assurances of Twin River Energy that all these details can be
worked out only after they are given permission to build.
We believe that the developer
behind the Twin River proposal and Point East project have not, and will not,
guarantee that they will fulfill their promises. We are unwilling to trust our health and the health of our
children and grandchildren to these promises.
