The developer officially withdrew their application for the pawn shop on Western Avenue. I grew up in this neighborhood and I am relieved that we kept this block from becoming a magnet for the wrong kind of attention. Thank you for showing up for our community.

Re: Stop the proposed Ameripawn plan at 2435-39 N. Western Avenue.
We are opposed to the proposed business location for Ameripawn at 2435-39 N. Western Avenue. A meeting was held at the office of Alderman Moreno on Wednesday, July 11th, 2012. All community members present were in opposition to Ameripawn's plan to purchase property for their retail use.
There are already two pawn shops (EZ Pawn and Cash America) within one mile of this location and there are 11 pawn shops operating within a two mile radius of the proposed development.
While pawn shop operators wish to project a positive light on their industry, research supports an undeniable nexus between pawn shops and crime. In addition, pawn shops are often targeted by criminals for break-ins and hold-ups. In light of the fact that Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Supt Garry McCarthy are targeting businesses that act as magnets for crime, why would we wish to add another pawn shop in our neighborhood?
While we desire positive business development in our community, we do not support Ameripawn's planned location. We believe it sends a message of financial decline which runs counter to every effort our community groups and individuals work hard to achieve every day.
Since this location's surrounding residential sector is subject to an impending shift in Aldermanic control, we ask that all three Aldermen are aware of our disapproval and support the wishes of the community.

Seeing this kind of energy proves that our neighborhood refuses to be a dumping ground for businesses that invite trouble. My neighbors and I have worked too hard to build a safe home for us to just sit back and let this happen.

The aldermen need to listen to us for once instead of letting these kinds of businesses destroy the block.
Used to live over there and it was already sketchy enough. Adding another one of these places is just asking for more break-ins.
PLEASE NO. We have enough pawn shops already. Keep this trash out of our ward.
We dont need this here. Our neighborhood is finally turning around and this just kills the vibe completely.
Our property values are finally going up why would they want to put this right in the middle of it? Total nightmare.

Pawn Shops signify the impending decline of an area where the downtrodden liquidate their final possessions for the barest of necessities, which for the clinically addicted includes drugs and alcohol. We do not wish to have such an establishment anywhere near our home, and instead wish for this to become occupied by families and those types of businesses that signal the revitalization of an area...such as Pot Belly and Starbucks. One way or another, this building must be razed and rebuilt...and soon. It is a rat-infested graffiti magnet that is dragging down property values and making the area a less desirable place to live.
