Comments: My taxs have paid for this road once, I *will not* pay for it again while the people in north Raleigh get their road handed to them on a silver platter. Mike Easly raided the highway trust fund, do we as tax payers get interest on the funds he stole from us I grew up with toll roads and it will be a cold day in hell before I spend a dime on a toll road here. I will drive out of my way to avoid them! Not NO but HELL NO to toll roads in this state!

Comments: What is the State doing with the profit from the high gas tax Perhaps in the pocket or wasting on expensive, non-productive trips. Or perhaps, the State should ensure new roads are paved properly the first go around and not always have to redo and make the citizens pay for their mistake. That's why we don't have enough money to build roads now.....waste, waste waste.

Comments: First, as long as we keep robbing the highway fund to pay for other programs, how can you ask us to pay tolls (another tax) for transportation that should have already been funded. 2nd - In the 1990's the state made "a promise" to build the loops around 7 major cities in NC. Why not toll ALL those loops to help pay for them, why just Wake County

Comments: Tolls are absolutely unnecessary. The tolls will be there long after the road is paid for. The tolls in Virginia Beach weren't removed unitl years after those roads were paid for. The North Carolina GA will see this as additional capital they can use and if anybody believes otherwise that they will give it up....then you are naive. So I guess the idea of "good" government is this: Squander away all the money and then tell the local residents, they have to pay again and more for it. North Carolina governments have shown zero ability to effectively manage money. As Wake County residents are now seeing with the mess that is the schools, then the great repaving efforts underway on I-40.... now this. And also, take a look at the surrounding states. We pay a very high gas tax compared to several of the neighboring states. Where is this money going to

Comments: No tolls in southern wake Co! If 540 is going to be tolled, then the NCDOT needs to toll North Raleigh as well. They have had the privilege of having the highway for serveral years already w/o paying!

Comments: Tolls are bad for many reasons: - They are innefficient. The cost of collecting is significant. - They are dangerous. Accident rates are much higher at toll plazas. - They slow down traffic. New roads are supposed to improve traffic. - They are unfair. User of toll roads pay through fuel tax and tolls hitting them up twice for the same road use. - They never go away when they should. Many examples across the country exist of this. - Finally, 540 between 40 and 55 is already paid for!!! Why should pay for it twice

Comments: David, I agree wholeheartedly with you. Western Wake citizens should not have to subsidize the rest of the county with this 'toll' road. It is double taxation. If toll roads are req'd to complete 540, then the entire length of 540 should be a toll road and not just a portion. This is a county wide issue!!!

Comments: The road (south-west sections of I-540) would be helpful. My daily commute to N. Raleigh each day is tough (1 hr+ even outside of rush periods) and with growth it will undoubtedly get tougher. That being said - I’ll put up with more traffic/time for the next 22 years vs. letting bad financial management/planning result in our northern neighbors getting to commute on my tax dollars, but not getting reciprocal funds for our area. They should have known there wouldn’t be enough money when they started the upper sections of I-540, but didn’t consider also making those sections toll roads also to help fund the entire project.

Comments: It's not fair to tax only the citizens of Western Wake County. If you're going to tax the southern portion of 540, the northern portion should be taxed, too. Why not toll 485 in Charlotte too! Let them get a little piece of the toll action. As long as we're changing legislation, TOLL I-95 AND GET NON-RESIDENT'S FUNDS for using our highways!!!

Comments: Our highway taxes already bought I-540. Just because the state cannot manage it's monies or properly design it's projects should not mean tht the taxpayers have to pay again. Don't turn North Carolina into another NY or NJ... lands of tolls and taxes.

Comments: I am completely against toll roads in any part of 540. Toll roads should be put on I-95 at the VA/SC borders and make all the snowbirds and drug dealers pay for the 540 expansion. We pay enough in tolls when we go to NY. If tolls are put on on this road, I will move to another county and take my taxes and my contribution to the Wake county economy elsewhere.
