Name: Dr Stephen F. Lunn on Mar 26, 2008Comments: I can see no value in the introduction of the term 'blended malt whisky'. Blended whisky is known to be a mix of garin and malt whiskies, malt whisky is, by definition, the product of pot still distillation of malted barley only . A single malt is the product of a single pot still distillery. A vatted malt is a mix of the malt whiskes from more than one pot still distillery. This classification has been understood since blended whiskies were first introduced to the market over a hundred and fifty years ago and I can see no reason for changing the existing nomenclature. It is confusing and unnecessary and I am totally against it. I cannot imagine what the SWA is hoping to achieve by this proposed legislative change other than alienating the consumer. I have never been totally convinced as to what a 'pure malt' is supposed to be, and am reasonably happy that this term be dropped. I would hope that distilleries did not market 'impure malts' and therefore feel that this descriptive term is irrelevant.Flag
