Austin city Council is planning on extending paid parking at downtown curb sides. The city Transportation Department has recommended extending parking meter hours citywide, currently 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, to 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Additionally, the department suggested extending the Monday through Saturday hours downtown (an area roughly bounded by Cesar Chavez Street, North Lamar Boulevard, 10th Street and Interstate 35) to midnight. This will affect volunteers who come downtown and help struggling non-profits such as the Paramount Theatre. We urge City Council to reject this proposal for extending curb side parking fee hours.
