Eliminating or severely reducing nuclear weapons

Nuclear weapons should not be a major threat in today's society. In reality nuclear weapons can do more harm than good. This is true because they can destroy the world ten times over if ever launched. Even now Russia and the United States holds a combined 28,000 out of the 30,000 nuclear weapons in the world. There are more nuclear weapons in the world now than can be considered adequate. When we talk of nuclear warheads we barely even talk about human lives. Instead we see them as defending the country. Because of nuclear warheads there will be no country. Less than one percent of the nuclear weapons the United States and Russia have are set for "hair-trigger" release. Just one US strategic nuclear warhead has an explosive power of about 25,000 trucks, each carrying 10 tons of dynamite. Just one Russian strategic nuclear weapon has an explosive power of about 40,000 trucks, each carrying 10 tons of dynamite. The truck bombs that destroyed the federal building in Oklahoma City or that damaged the World Trade Center in New York had the explosive force of about 10 tons of dynamite. Just one nuclear weapon can vaporize all of Washington D.C. or the Greater New York area. Not to mention the surrounding land it will leave unusable for years.
