| 105 | Peter B. Lockhart | This idea of a 2nd dental school has never made any sense to me. I am not at all convinced it will solve the problem of maldistribution of dentists in this state. UNC-CH has historically had one of the top 2-3 dental schools in the country but they are in trouble and this will only hurt this school more. The facyulty do not exist to supply a new shhool and the financial resources are badly needed by our existing school. In short, it likely won't solve the problem and it will create other problems. |

| 113 | C. Scott Davenport, DDS | I feel thaat the dentists in this state are very willing to examine any and all possibilities for making access to care a reality for those who wish to seek it. However, I feel that there are much better ways to achieve this goal. The establishment of a second dental school in NC is not the best approach from a financial or academic standpoint. The money used to create a second dental school could be used to subsidize dentists willing to located in underserved areas. The establishment of a second dental school can not gaurantee that the graduates will go to those areas and will make recruitment of necessary faculty at the two schools more difficult than if there were only one, expanded dental school. |

| 140 | Tom Arkle III | This is a total waste of taxpayers money by some irresponsible politicians. Building a new dental school in eastern North Carolina in order to address the access to dental care problem in the eastern counties of North Carolina is ridiculous. Establishing a program at UNC Chapel Hill Dept of Dentistry with an emphasis of dentists placement in easten North Carolina and an increase in dental class sizes will accomplish the same goals as a new dental with million of dollars of savings to the citizens of North Carolina. |

| 142 | Gary Sugg | I have heard the arguments for and against and must come down against it. My concern is about the quality of dental practitioner that such a school is likely to produce. |

| 146 | Bilal Saib, DDS | Although statistically there may be a need for dentists in the state. the result of having another dental school will be more dentist coming to urban areas which are already saturated. The solution to the "need for dentist in rural areas" problem may be in incentives for dentists such as tax breaks, loan repayment incentives etc. This happens in other industries all of the time yet dentists are left out of this. |

| 149 | David M. Lambert, DDS | This is my second post to this iPetition - so deduct one vote - however, only after reading...
The proposal to open a new school at ECU can only be characterized as "tail wagging the dog". Please see our October 2006 newsletter (www.triangleoms.com/data/newsletters/TOMSNL_1006.htm
for 7 good reasons why alternative measures should be considered before running pall mall to the legislature with a request for millions to duplicate existing resources.
It's one thing to sign a petition - it's another thing to vote with your wallet. Those practitioners in NC who wish a more responsible approach to perceived manpower problems should consider a more organized approach to include financial donations to ensure our voices are heard at the legislative level.
I have yet to find who initiated this petition, but whoever it is should be commended and should consider uniting this opposition upon a broader platform.
Best,
David Lambert |
