Petition to NCDS to oppose second dental school

We urge the North Carolina Dental Society to take a strong position opposing the fiscally irresponsible concept of building a second state supported dental school in North Carolina. We charge the North Carolina Dental Society to represent the profession of dentistry as its organized political voice in matters pertaining to oral health as follows:

1) Determine the real manpower (dentists) needed to address the demand for dental services throughout the state of North Carolina and educate lawmakers concerning the public health “need” vs. the public demand for services. This should include projections of both growth in population and growth in the number of dentists from all avenues.

2) Debate and determine the most effective and efficient method to meet the demand for dental care.

3) Promote and defend the role of the dental profession as advocates for sound public policy related to oral health.

4) Promote and defend the profession’s status as experts in oral health education, oral and perioral clinical evaluation, and the treatments that pertain to oral health.

5) Lobby the Board of Governors to use the discretion granted in the appropriations bill to seek a non-biased feasibility study to determine the long-term viability and costs associated with two state supported dental schools. The study should also compare other alternatives to a second school that may be less costly to taxpayers.

6) Promote alternatives for meeting any shortage (or excess) of dental manpower for meeting demands and projected demands.

7) Publicize the consistent historical record of organized dentistry as an advocate for the good of the public. ( Water fluoridation, starting a dental school, building public health dental clinics around the state, volunteer clinics, public school screenings, pushing preventive services, etc.)

8) Strongly oppose any public policy related to oral health that is neither studied, debated, nor supported by non-biased data.

We believe that the vast membership of the North Carolina Dental Society is in favor of the dental society taking a stand on the important issue of building a second state supported dental school. Furthermore, promoting “neutrality” will jeopardize the relevance of the North Carolina Dental Society in future oral health policy debates.

This petition has been started by Dentists for Fiscal Responsibility. Across the state dentists have been asking for a way to show the dental society leadership that widespread opposition to a second state supported dental school is being ignored. These dentists know that there is an easier and cheaper way to be sure the demand for dental care is met. These dentists believe the misinformation being promoted by those in favor of a second school is fleecing the taxpayers.
