We the undersigned condemn the Australian government's treatment of refugees and their children through the cruel and often extended punishment of mandatory detention.
Refugees must be presumed to be innocent victims of war, unrest, or persecution in their home lands until they are proved otherwise. This is equivalent to the basic presumption of innocence upon which our own fundamental rights depend.
To prevent this inhumane treatment we the undersigned ask the government to call a referendum to prevent the persecution of groups without a voice via the full and unconditional adoption of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The opportunity for the ordinary citizen to feel that he or she has a role in government, has a way of passing or repealing laws, or changing the constitution by popular vote, is a very democratic and healthy way to relieve the growing dissatisfaction and feeling of frustration with our government, and this issue is one for which it is too easy for us to turn a blind eye and quietly ignore.
Be a part of changing Australia for the better; many of us were once immigrants to Australia ourselves.
