I would like to see the risk assessment that was carried out prior to introducing such hazardous seating on this route. I presume they took advice from H&S experts and ergonamists prior to doing this. If so they should be able to furnish the passangers with a copy of that assessment. I would request that this is made available.Flag

I find on the longer trips, I loose circulation in my legs because of the cramped conditions, this is a health issue and the 444s should be brought back into service immediately.Flag

Name: Paul Butterworth on Jan 9, 2007Comments: I fully support this petition as a daily commuter from Rowlands Castle - i justify my journey by being able to work on the train on my laptop - this is impossible on the blue trains due to lack of a frontal seat tray or table. Also, the seats are so cramped together, that frequently only 2 passengers occupy a three seat space as there is insufficent room for a third person!!!Flag

Name: Caroline Findley on Jan 10, 2007Comments: It has come to the attention of myself and many fellow commuters that it is the intention of South West Trains to replace the 444 series trains with 450 series trains on the Portsmouth to Waterloo line. The conditions on these trains are cramped, uncomfortable and make working on the train absolutely impossible. There isnt even a place to put a cup of coffee! In additional to this the seats raise serious health and safety issues, given that myself and other passengers are suffering from backache as a direct result of this change to the service. For those of us who regularly travel on SWT and have no alternative, it is not acceptable that this change has been implemented by stealth with no regard for passenger opinion. The 450 trains are designed for suburban routes, not for longer journey times. As a monopoly provider, SWT have a duty to passengers to ensure their power is not abused. Currently this is certainly not the case.Flag

This is a cynical cost cutting exercise by SWT which entirely disregards the needs and comfort of its customers. 450s are an incredibly inappropriate "solution" to a "problem" that has been hugely overstated by SWT. Portsmouth is simply not a suburb of London and sitting on a 450 for an hour and a half simply isn't acceptable .Flag

Name: Paul Hillier on Jan 10, 2007Comments: Not only is my journey more uncomfortable as a result of the 450 being introduced, but i have no means of refeshments on my journey from petersfield now. This is a serious breach of health as the seats are to small for this journey and i have a back pain as result of my 1hr 5 min Journey (which actually is more like 1hr 20 mins with the current trains starting at Fratton) I have paid an increase from £2992 to £3120 on my season ticket and this is the service i get back. Quite frankly this is disgusting and unacceptable. I regulary witness empty `middle` seats on the 450 train as now one wants to sit in them as it is so uncomfortable for a journey of anything longer than 25-30mins. I have e-mailed myLocal MP Michael mates regarding the above. Regards PaulFlag

A commuter for more than 15 years, this step significantly reduces the comfort, quality and the support (tables) that so many of us on long journeys need to work effectively. Costs are extremely high and rising - we do not expect a serious reduction in quality. All the literature around the renewal of the franchise suggests that there are many improvements. Clearly at best this is misleading and in reality is fundamentally untrue.Flag

However my main complaint is that these seats are extremely uncomfortable: I have had problems with my back and these problems are definitely exacerbated by the seats on the blue 450 trains. I have never had a problem with the seats on the white 444 trains. I understand that there is also a plan to remove some of the lavatories from the 450 trains. Since this is an additional reduction to the service expected on a long distance train journey, will SWT be reducing the fares as compensationFlag

Name: Richard Stokes on Jan 10, 2007Comments: The blue 450 trains are not suitable for long distance commuting. In standard class there is insufficient space for passengers 3 abreast, insufficient legroom in the 2 behind 2 configuration and no tables for working. In addition the carriages do not give as smoother ride as the 444 as you are thrown (quite violently at times) from side to side. Travelling First Class is not an option as it is prohibitively expensive and were a high proportion of standard class passengers to upgrade there would not be sufficient seats!! Please reverse your decision.Flag
