Jonathan RoyThe seats are just not big enough for average sized adults. The triple seats can only be used by 2 people The double seats are not big enough for 2 to sit in comfort. You may be able to claim that you have more seats, but now less people are able to sit that before.
Toby J C ParkerI travel three times a week from the IoW and consider that the combination of near third world conditions imposed up on us by the 450 SWT rolling stock as well as the inability for any liaison between SWT and Wightlink (resulting in 58 minutes of waiting in the Wightlink terminal) is at times too much for mere mortals to bear. Animals are treated with greater respect.
jean brooksreducing service quality in this manner is totally unacceptable
AnonymousI travel Havant - Waterloo regularly. The 450 trains are cramped leaving not enough space for passengers, let alone the possibility of trying to work
Steve CusackHATE the 450! LOVE the 444...
David BeeneyThe introduction of such trains on what has always been regarded as an inter-city route is, frankly, an insult to people who use the Waterloo to Portsmouth service. It is noteable that this route now uses largely the same type of train as that frequently used on stopping services on the line to Putney - a journey of a mere 20 minutes. It is not logical for this type of train to be suitable for both types of journey. Please can we have a proper Inter-City type train - such as the white 455s - returned to all services on the Waterloo to Portsmouth line. I would prefer a return of the slam-door trains than a continuation of the 450s!
AnonymousI travel on the portsmouth line every day and it is abismal. In the last year or two I have never seen anyone sit in a middle (of 3-in-a-row seats) opposed to standing. They dont listen to the passenger and I doubt they plan to

Clive CouzensWhen I first complained to SWT about these trains, I was told that nobody else had!
Den SaundersThe seats in these trains are awful, I end up with back ache on every journey

Ken Bevis
Neil WhitakerI used to be able to work on the previous trains, now i cant even sit comfortably. The seats are dreadful!
John SmithThe 450 trains are awful. I now use Southern from Havant to Victoria, so I can actually relax and work when necessary on board. Cheaper and more customer friendly as well! Better for the long term ecomony of this country, as I can also work on their trains, and have not been off work with a bad back since.
Mr J SandsOvercrowding only becomes an issue on the suburban part of the route. This is supposed to be a main line. What about people travelling south of Woking? And don't Southampton/Weymouth trains go via Woking? How is it they can cope with the White trains? And will somebody please tell me how an 8 coach suburban blue train can carry more passengers than a 10 coach white main line train - and what about 4 coach blue suburban trains running on a main line? No justification whatsoever!
Dick HeadThat's privatization for you. You really all thought this was going to be so good. You dug your own grave.

chris harmanThese trains actually cause overcrowding because many people would rather stand or sit in vestibules than squeeze in between two people, which in some cases is impossible anyway. Secondly, more 444 trains run as slow trains i.e more stops between Woking and Portsmouth when they'd be better deployed as fast trains.
Paul Savage
Paul CooperI am a daily commuter to London from Fratton and am very unhappy with the current state of the South West Trains operation.
Matt Cone
Andrew PerrinThe 450's are uncomfirtable, squashed and restrictive. Not a good start to the day - spending an hour squashed (I am not overweight) with knees resting on the chair in front (not enough legroom), overcrowded with many passengers standing for many stops. How is this an improvement or what the customer demands? More 444's or go back to the slam doors! Don't make us all suffer the 450's!

Adrian GunterIncreased capacity? That's nonsense. The middle seats are usually left empty as people prefer to stand than endure the awful conditions offered by these unsuitable trains.

carl leroy-smithI ride on these newer trains is very bad. I have noticed the difference as an architect i have always sketched on my trips to london. with these new trains the ride is so bumpy that on most parts of the line sketching is impossible. The idea that ride comfort is getting worse not better is unacceptable. I am sure the MD of SWT would not accept his new BMW 7-Series being more uncomfortable than his 1995 version.
Charles AtkinsonFirst Class is a disgrace and very bad for my back!
AnonymousThe 450 class trains were never meant to be used on long distance routes, ie beyond Guildford. The Rail Passengers Council report, funded by the government, says this quite clearly but SWT have chosen to ignore it. They pretend these "high density" trains are needed because of the extra people now travelling. Complete nonsense. Yes a few of the morning and evening trains are busy, but most of the day it's just a rolling furniture show. Come on SWT - stop ripping us off and give us our proper trains back! SWT stands for Squashed Without Tables.
David Gibson
Richard
Xavier SchoullerWe are paying megabucks for the service so we need better comfort.
David HuntI am at University in Leeds: siemens trains operate on many of the services in the surrounding area - transpennine express DMU as well as overhead electric units on some suburban services. They are very effective units however it must be pointed out that on the Intercity services (transpennine) we have a 2+2 seating arrangement. On the suburban it is 3+2. I must note strongly as well that given the suburban trains operate within WYPTE the fares are MUCH lower than on South West Trains which helps significantly to compensate for the loss of comfort. The transpennine is also still cheaper when operating in Lancashire and North Yorkshire. The 450 services here are more expensive and of a lower quality. The DfT have put excessive premiums on the SWT franchise and to make up the shortfall Stagecoach have behaved appaulingly. The Junipers should be scrapped, the 450s should go on suburban services, the 444s should go on the London-Portsmouth line and even higher standard Intercity units should run on the London-Southampton-Bournemouth line i.e Wessex Electrics or new higher comfort units.
Danny PayneThese trains are totally unsuitable for long distance travel and must compromise health and safety regulations when 'packed' with people in seats and in the aisles! What is the maximum number of travellers in each carriage?
Anonymous
AnonymousBring back the 442's (120 carriages going to waste) and move the 444's to the pompey line. 450's are only short distance all stations trains and therefore not suitable.
susie wongSWT may be providing 21% more seats on the Waterloo to Portsmouth line, but how many people actually get to sit down on those extra seats? They're far too narrow for a normal-sized person, which means many people end up standing rather than trying to shoehorn themselves into a seat that's too small. And yes, the seats, because they're so upright, do cause backache. With an aisle that is too narrow (I've seen ticket inspectors stuggle to get through) and seats packed so closely, manoeuvring on the train is awful. Passengers walking along an aisle almost always hit fellow passengers with their bag/briefcase/luggage/shopping bags and passengers standing up to put on their coat inevitably swipe seated passengers with their coat tails as well as putting their backside or genital area rather a bit too close to the faces of fellow seated passengers. It's an unbearable invasion of space - because there is no space! The white 444s were/are fine. They should add more carriages to those to provide more seating.
Steve CollinsThe 450 train seats are totally unsuitable for long distance commuting. Since their introduction on the Portsmouth line I have experienced backache which has worsened as time has gone on. This must warrant as a serious health and safety issue. SW trains policy statement on this subject shows a complete misunderstanding about “customer care “ and total contempt for its passengers.

Ed NattrassSeats are too close together to allow someone taller than 6'2" (approximately) to comfortably fit his/her legs in.
dan banceI have experienced regular back pain from the 450 train, and sometime would rather sit on the floor than be the 3rd person squeeze into a chair that is body width and not should width. i used to arrange my commute around the450 but now I have no choice
AnonymousTry to commute regularly and get a seat in comfort - not possible!!!
brian smithI have just posted these comments to SWT. RE: Class 450. Yet again I have just suffered another appaling journey between Portsmouth and London on one of those dam class 450's. Yet again I had to endure another cramped ucomfortable journey trying to sit on a seat which is just to small. The fact that you think it is acceptable for us to sit in these appaling conditions for over 2 hours tells me alot about what you realy think of us as passengers rather than the corporate rubbish you tell us every day. Travelling on one of your 450's is without doubt the worse travel experience any passenger can go through. How you are allowed to get away with it is beyond me. You will notice that my ticket type now says various and not season ticket as it has done for nearly the last 30 years and that is because the 450 is such an uncofortable experience that I now use other means of transportation rather than sit in discomfort for 2 hours. It may be slower but at least I am relaxed and not stressed as I would be if I used the 450. Only last week I turned up at Portsmouth Harbour for a journey to London, saw that the next service was a 450 and instead drove all the way. I would rather sit in my car for 3 hours and pay the congestion charge that pay to sit on a 450. Just for the record you cannot sit 5 people across the train and sit in any sort of comfort as the seats are just too small. Any thing you say to the contrary is yet another bare faced lie. I have just read your so called independent Class 450 ergonomics assesssment. What a joke. I notice that when the point about seat width size is mentioned you just say, "The seat width of the class 450 is comparable to that on other vehicles surveyed." In other words we know its too small and we know all our customers hate it but we don't give a dam and we are going to do nothing about it. The fact that you got rid of the most cofortable train ever to run from Portsmouth (442) and replaced them with the most disgustingly uncomfortable train ever built (450) just to earn yourselves a few extra quid at our expense is the main reason I hope and pray you lose your franchise. I nearly cried last year when you got it renewed. Every fellow passenger I know felt the sae way. Never have I seen such a badly run service in over 30 years of travelling. I know you will do nothing to make our journeys a little more comfortable but after another tortureous journey on one of your 450's it feels really good to tell you what I think of your unbearable trains. I am now going to the SAYNOTOTHE450 website to share my views with your other poor suffering passengers.
AnonymousIs it possible to advise which services are white trains and which blue?
AnonymousSiemens built trains are not designed well at all. 450s coming out as the worst IMHO.
