AnonymousI used to get an hours work done on the train - it is now impossible with the cramped conditions - even reading a paper is a struggle. The middle seat on the block of 3 is useless - if 2 adults sit either side only a child can comfortably sit there. Bring back the trains this service needs.

nick smithI am a long term commuter and since the arrival of the 450's i am seriously considering finding work closer to home due to the discomfort i have to endure on these pathetically small seated trains.
AnonymousThis train is killing my back...I'm having constant pain now where I never had anything...and every time the doors open, all the heat escapes, unlike the double doored 444s....And I see that Stagecoach has made higher profits than expected on SWT and are handing about £600 million back to shareholders....so its stuff the customers all round...
Ms Alena WatchornI strongly object to the use of the blue trains, which result in severe cramping conditions for passengers. I am a gold card member and would expect consideration to be given to passengers comfort.
Anonymousthe new 3+2 carriages are far too cramped. People have to overlap their shoulders to fit in. It creates a very stressful travel experience. I may stop using the train and will strongly advise others of the problems and to avoid commuting by train
Stephen HellierThe withdrawn class 442s are less than 20 years old and are arguably the highest quality trains in the south east of England, yet they are currently wasting away at the Eastleigh railway works. They were designed for the Southampton and Weymouth line, and when the class 444s were introduced they were said to not be suitable for the Southampton and Weymouth line and promised to Portsmouth. Shame on South West Trains, whose train services I used for seven years often left a lot to be desired.
David Little
Adam DouglasI have been commuting for 9 years on SWT an struggle to comprehend the fall off in all aspects of the service provided by what is (although DfT would heartily confute this) a monopoloy operation. I have notice the decline since 2003-2004, and stand stupified by the the numerous price increases both in season ticket fairs and station parking charges at Petersfield. If you read my entry plase heed this point if nothing else: SWT and their operating policy is targetted at 1) profit and 2) govrnment performance targets not passengers. How many times have you travelled on a 4 or 5 carriage short formation? Well the train is not late, so the lack of extra carriages does not count against them on the performance monitoring. When wer you last on a very late train that was terminated early (particularly at i.e. Woking, Guildford or Haslemere? The is because doing this does not displace traIN stock as badly as if the train ran to it's destination (Waterloo, Portsmouth etc.) hence, if the in the latter were the case making the delay carry over to the next journey of that unit. SWT simply do not care if a batch of very delayed commuters have an even more difficult journey. How many toilets were out of use last time you travelled? Oh and who backside was perched on your shoulder on a 450 unit out of waterloo last night due to overcrowding? One simple solution that will hurth the companies performance that is monitiored and they will struggle to avoid reporting: complaints submitted by customers. Next time a uni is terminated early, or there is a short formation etc. obtain a complaints form from your destination (or in te even of a hearty delay from your station of origin and invest 5 minutes in a literary rant. Once received, SWT have to log this, and a member of SWT staff has to answer it. It costs them, and will hit them in the only are they care about: operating costs. Consider the impact of SWT terminating a train early (as has happened recently), and 500-800 passengers submitting written complaints on SWT's hallowed performance targets, not to mention administrative costs? It will should not take many instances of this for SWT to reconsider this strategy. The award of the latest franchise to this contemptible 'cowboy outfit' is a decision that is truly peerless in its' utter incomprehensible iniquity and incompetence.

Iain HardingI wholeheartedly support this petition. It is about time that SWT started listening to their long suffering customers. The blue trains are horrendously uncomfortable.
Laurence CallcutThis move to a new "third class" is like every other change dressed up as a service improvement that we see nowadays (overseas call centres etc) - ie simply a cost cutting - profit boosting excercise. Only a private monopoly can get away with this. Its about time the railway was re-nationlised.

Andrew McKenzieThe only passengers that stood on 444's did so by choice to be first on the Underground etc. - at the rear there was plenty of room. I switch services now to specifically avoid the discomfort of the 450.

John GillardI am extremely unhappy with SouthWest Trains decision to deploy 450 trains on the Portsmouth to London route. Whereas I'm sure this type of train is appropriate for surburban commuter routes, these trains are entirely unsuited to longer journeys (anything over about 30 to 45 minutes) as the seating is cramped and very uncomfortable. The fact the use of these trains coincided with a fare increase well above inflation adds insult to injury.
Peter CimaHave you ever tried getting up to london on a 450 with a family of 3 planning to spend 2 weeks up there ??? It was bad enough on the 444. We end up taking up an extra 3 seats with our suit cases ... so much for increasing the number of seats. These trains are cramped, the seats are hard, and there is no space for luggage ... we need the 444s back !!!
Paula WellsToo hard no leg room-a three seater still only takes 2 people. We are all getting larger SW Trains!
AnonymousWhen I travel on the 450 trains (to/from Petersfield) I always have a back pain after sitting in the most uncomfortable seats - which are also too narrow. Train designed for short journeys in outer suburbs - definitely unsuitable for Portsmouth line.
AnonymousStop this madness now. Re-introduce the 444 sets and try to justify your ridiculous prices!
Katheryn SochonStop these horrendous trains now! They are cramped, uncomfortable, often late and tottaly unsuitable for the transport needs of the modern Essex-Girl.
Hugh 'Ternofsy' DennisThese trains are truly awful, and impossible to get any work done on. No working toilets, cramped, rude staff. Makes the journey a nightmare.
Katheryn BarnardAs a pregnant commuter - firstly the seats are very uncomfortable and the over crowding plus late notice cancellations or late notice cncelled trains make travelling more of a burden than it is generally.
Steve PimmI agree wholeheartedly with the originators on this subject and how SWT reached a peak some what in 06 in customer service. This matter and the incredulous future hike in both peak & off peak fares are slap in the face to SWTs customers, who are subject to a no choice monopoly.

Christopher DanielI have been commuting for 10 years from Petersfield and up until December 2006 when the 450 stock started to be introduced was begining to feel that SWT were starting to provide an adequate service in rteturn for our fare. Now this is far from the case. Their actions display an absolute disdain for their customer - an unacceptable stance in most businesses, other than a monopoly which they hold in conjunction with a disinterested regulator. When the "new" rolling stock was introduced two years ago the 450's appeared on some services and in response to Commuters complaints SWT aassured us that they were for suburban routes and would be replaced with 444's, which they were. To claim that they were intended for this line is far from the case.
AnonymousI travel frequently by train from Petersfield to Camberley and thus am well acquainted with the 450 trains which travel constantly between Guildford and Ascot. Although they appear to be of modern design they are basic and uncomfortable trains but suitable for passengers travelling short distances with frequent stops. My journeys take forty five minutes between Guildford and Camberley but they are acceptable as this route is not a busy one. The 450's should not have to be used by London to Portsmouth passengers, particularly on the fast trains. Why does this route always seem to play second fiddle to the London to Southampton line?
jamesthere shit. get the white ones back.
Iain Whitehorn
brendan Gibb-GrayHavant to Waterloo is a longer distance route and the new trains offer poor seating. It seems to me impossible to seat comfortably next to even a normal sized adult, I am sure confrontations will be the result.
JohnThe true reason that Stagecoach have sent money back to share holders is that they sold their London bus companies to an Australian Company. The Reason why these horrid blue trains are on our route is that the piggy goverment wants too much cash out of Stagecoach for SWT. Get the Bournmouth trains our fo the depot and give us back the white trains!!!!

Patrick GlithroThe trains being used now are completely unfit for purpose.
Ian TinneyThe seats are clearly not designed to seat an Anglo-Saxon Adults. Since one person cannot fit into a seat, by the time the third person sits down they only have 2/3 of a seat. No tables and no arm room to use a laptop. Since we have no choice of train company we need outside intervention to force SWT to treat their customers like human beings instead of cattle.
Anthony Canadine-Bate
charlie lovettHaving only just found out about this campaign, I support it wholeheartedly; I'm very thankful for the efforts of the protest initiators for focusing and voicing the pent up rage in my fellow commuters that I'm surrounded by in my daily commute. The blue trains are a hoax, you might as well put on a toy train with a few thousand extra seats and claim to have fulfilled the franchise requirement These blue trains carry in fact less passengers than the white trains; as 'real-life' commuters rather than statistical imaginary ones, will stand beside an empty seat, rather than become squashed next to a fellow passenger in debasing and uncomfortable pre-historic travel arrangements A protest along the lines of the 'First Great Western' fare strike may be called for Or, a day on which passengers time shift their day, to only use the white trains, refusing to use the blue trains, but standing on the platforms anyway, which would cause us all one day of hassle but might make a point for how strong the feeling is. Waterloo would be blocked at the peak home hours and several main stations in the morning would be chaos If management put white trains on, on that day, the point would also be made
Stephen Reynolds
Peter MooreI am tall; the 450's are extremely uncomfortable and represent literally daylight robbery for the fares that we must pay.
David HollowayThe peak time trains are only busy because extra stops at Guildford and Woking have been added. It appears that these have been added to justify teh reshuffle of stock to be able to cut the costs by retiring the 442 trains. Stopping Bournemouth line trains at Woking rather than Portsmouth trains would help.
William GodfreyWhat are you thinking?
Paul CollardI detest the 450 trains I pay for monthly 1st class season tickets and I believe that we are not getting a first class service and the seats are ergonomically harmful.Thee 440 trains must be restoreed to our line(Havant-Portsmouth)
Bryony Carpenter
Hugh Green
Julian SamblesIt is ridiculous and unacceptable that we have to endure such a cramped service for such a major route.
v bradfordYes, these trains are inhumanely uncomfortable. It is impossible to believe that the designers can have had the remotest experience of commuting. Even two moderately sized persons are unable to sit side by side without an unacceptable level of elbow and thigh rubbing. Since introduction of the new trains, I have suffered pains in hip joints and ankles, which I fully ascribe to the new seating arrangements, although I have no conclusive proof. Certainly however, I have suffered painful but minor burns on a number of occasions as a result of being unable to avoid contact with the low level heaters, as a result of the cramped conditions. My most sincere wish is that the designers of these trains should spend eternity in purgatory, i.e . travelling on their own monstrous creations!
Nick Hall-Stride
Belinda HawkinsThe sooner these trains are replaced the better. Cramped conditions, uncomfortable seating causing back and joint pain and hideous to endure particularly on longer journeys. Maybe they should be moved to shorter and quicker routes.
