Name: Beverly Stoeltje on Oct 3, 2012Comments: Getting to campus for teaching, meetings, research and all of our work is essential. If faculty and staff are to perform at our best, we should at least have a parking solution that facilitates our best performance; for all the reasons stated, we will be able to perform at our maximum if parking is retained by IU.Flag

Name: Chris Myers on Oct 3, 2012Comments: Even from an objective perspective (not filtered by being a professional staff person at IU), the idea of privatizing a basic necessity to your faculty and staff is short-term gain with absolute long term burden that can't be captured adequately in a cost-benefit analysis.Flag

Name: Benjamin Robinson on Oct 3, 2012Comments: Privatizing parking gives the IU community less say in how parking is managed. Prices go up, and efforts to promote alternative transportation could require IU to compensate the private vendor. OSU economists have analyzed the deal at their school and say it is a bad one. Take a look at their research: http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~weide/parking/index.html Since the state has been privatizing support for public education, household educational debt has soared to over $1 trillion. It doesn't seem that privatization of public assets has been going so well for most of us.Flag

Name: Jim Gibson on Oct 3, 2012Comments: IU is a community, not a commodity. It's time for the upper level administration to stop acting like a bunch of Republicans and remember that humane treatment of staff is a good thing...a VERY good thing. Purdue got stuck with Mitch Daniels, and we don't need our administration following his "role modeling"...ugh!!Flag

Name: R Gordon Hershey on Oct 3, 2012Comments: When I came to IU, I was given to understand that the parking fee was aimed at allocating a scarce resource (parking spaces) and not raising money for IU. I later learned that IU was the second largest (after Indianapolis) receiver of funds from parking tickets. Privatizing will bring even more outrageous increases for parking and the increase, in turn, will force many out of the use of the IU lots. This will cause the kind of loss of income that will be met by the privatized operation by further increases in the cost per vehicle for parking. The vicious cycle will continue until a more enlightened administration decides to "fix" the parking problem one more time. Let's skip the nasty loop that can easily be foreseen and foresworn!Flag

Name: Claire Y Van Den Broek on Oct 3, 2012Comments: As a public university, Indiana U should keep the best interests of its community at heart, even if that means making some financial compromises. It should not be beyond a university's ability to offer dependable, affordable parking built on local labor. Naturally we ought to discourage the use of cars in the first place, but often it is those residents who most need our protection from price inflation who come from the farther reaches of our community (where housing is more affordable). I hope the committee will continue to look at solutions other than privatization in its quest for sustainable parking management.Flag
