Name: Carol McDonough on Aug 8, 2010Comments: The Mayor and Councillors Mount Alexander Shire Dear Councillors This proposal would be very bad for maintaining the health and well being of individuals families and households and our community please do not allow it. How can the Council facilitate the resumption of the sorely missed program of indoor netball etc at the goods shed which was good for our community, especially our young people With thanks Carol McDonoughFlag

Name: Mez Woodward on Aug 8, 2010Comments: With a long history in working with family breakdown and counselling, I am acutely aware of the negative impacts that excessive gambling can have on some individuals and their families. From another perspective I am concerned that such a venue is inconsistent with the culture that sustains us as residents and draws people to Castlemaine. This is a culture that strives to achieve a balance between economic, environmental, social and cultural needs and truly promotes the health and wellbeing of both people and place.Flag

Name: David Sime on Aug 8, 2010Comments: Castlemaine is a pretty special place, that's why we were drawn here. As a town and a community we don't need more pokies. Quite apart from preying on the vulnerable they can only detract from that special character. Please, no pokies in the Castlemaine Goods Shed!Flag

Name: Bruce Mitchell on Aug 8, 2010Comments: Castlemaine does not need any more gaming machines, let alone sixty-five. Approval of this application flies in the face of well-researched and reasonable advice from any number of social service agencies and support groups that the effects of gambling are detrimental to any community. Castlemaine already has no shortage of addicted gamblers and to actively encourage further expansion of gambling facilities is not only morally wrong, but politically stupid. In terms of planning the location is also hopeless. Adding dozens more vehicles to the already inadequate railway car park does not indicate this proposal is the work of people with even a hint of foresight.Flag

Name: Gloria Meltzer on Aug 8, 2010Comments: It is beyond belief that our Shire Council would permit turning the Castlemaine Railway Station Goodshed into a venue for pokies? What is our town coming to? First, a white elephant $15 million aquatic centre, and now pokies. There'll probably be a mass exodus from this area of all those wonderful creative people who came here seeking a better lifestyle.Flag

Name: Vaughan Greenberg on Aug 8, 2010Comments: Fancy our council not protecting a heritage valued building, but instead allowing it to be a gambling venue, a place where young and old can lose their money and become problem gamblers. And I thought Castlemaine was different.Flag

Name: Grace McCaughey on Aug 8, 2010Comments: It is mainly vulnerable people on low incomes who provide the profits to poker machine operators. As well milliuons of dollars each year will leave Mount Alexander Shire. This is money that would be spent in local shops on food, clothing, shoes, household goods, services. Councillors and staff, Please be bold, stand up for those whose voices are rarely heard-- your most vulnerable residents.Flag

Name: Trish Pilley on Aug 8, 2010Comments: Castlemaine does not need any more pokies. If the Maryborough Highland Society wants to put more pokies somewhere, they should place them in Maryborough. If this is a not-for-profit organisation, why are they exploiting socially/economically disadvantaged people who will be the losers if this development goes ahead. And why are they threatening the liveability of a beautiful town? What do they spend their profits on - more kilts?Flag

Name: Larraine Kollmorgen on Aug 8, 2010Comments: I shudder to think of the consequences if this plan goes ahead. Pokie machines never have a good outcome no matter how much the instigators pretty the plan up. I have had past experience of this very thing in Horsham where many people opposed the project but it went ahead anyway, endorsed by council. Many more people became addicted to gambling, their were severe problems with noise and parking for the surrounding homes and the value of private property nearby plummeted.Flag

Name: Julie Flynn on Aug 8, 2010Comments: A150% growth in the number of pokies in this shire is likely to reflect poorly on the health and wellbeing of our community as a whole and directly impact on the most vulnerable members of our community. Poker machines promote gambling additions, and recent evidence links poker machines with criminal behaviours. Allowing this development would go against the Municipal Health and Wellbeing Plan for Mount Alexander Shire.Flag

Name: Stephanie Miller on Aug 8, 2010Comments: The proposed introduction of 65 poker machines can only be detrimental to the public life of Castlemaine. We already have one venue with poker machines which should satisfy the demand within this community. The only winners would be the owners of the machines. Gamblers and their families are the losers. Please reject this proposal.Flag

Name: Susan Flanagan on Aug 8, 2010Comments: The introduction of another venue for gambling in Castlemaine is unwarranted and unnecessary. Statistics have proven that problem gambling, with its potentially devastating impacts on the finances, personal lives and relationships of the affected gamblers, is related to heightened anxiety, depression, and in extreme cases, to suicide. The results of a survey (Simon, USA, 1995) on compulsive gamblers found that: 20% had attempted suicide 63% had seriously considered suicide. These figures were 50 times greater than most 'within lifetime' estimates for the general population. The proposed use of the railway buildings would also increase traffic in the vicinity of the station and add to the already chronic shortage of available parking for the railway patrons.Flag

It feeds off the weakness of those that can least afford to loose money. I strongly oppose these machines in out town and I think it would be socially irresponsible for Council to allow it.Flag

Name: Frank Pederick on Aug 8, 2010Comments: The old railway goods shed is not a suitable location for the installation of gambling machines. These are used to prey on some of the most vulnerable people in the community as many reports have shown. There is no net benefit to the community from these machines. They could be compared with the output of the tobacco industry which also profits from the long term misfortunes of those addicted and also places a financial burden on the community. The town does not need more of these machines. Please take action to forestall this proposal, Frank Pederick 24 Sawmill Rd CastlemaineFlag

Name: Bridget Leach on Aug 8, 2010Comments: Councillors, don't be bribed by the "community facilities" that are being offered. There are many better ways of providing community facilities other than places people can leave their children while they shove money they cannot afford into machines. And what about the impact on the area round the station - parking, drunks, noise? Is this the welcome to the town we want for tourists arriving by train?Flag
