The proposed Bus Lane is part of a council driven project sponsored by TFL and is part of a large regeneration programme for the Fair Green area of Mitcham Town Centre.  Most of the regeneration is really good, like envigorating the Market, smartening up the shop fronts and generally improving the ground area of the Fair Green.  However, the Bus Lane will split the present pedestrian area in two making it vertually unusable for anything except very small activities.  The character of the area will be destroyed forever and the danger caused by the two way Bus Lane will make it dangerous for young and old alike because the area has been used for pedestrians for so many years.
