We want REAL representation for ALL students to TBR

We are a group of students from East Tennessee State University gathering signatures from students at Tennessee Board of Regents schools to add to a letter we are sending to Governor Phil Bredesen. The letter is about Nicholas Mitchell, a student at ETSU, that was recently beaten by a land slide victory in a SGA Presidential election because of his divisive and unethical campaign.  We stopped him from representing us at ETSU. Now we need your help to stop him from representing us ALL as the Student Representative for Tennessee Board of Regents.

Nicholas Mitchell is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and former President of College Republicans. During the election Mitchell received several complaints from students because he began campaigning early a direct violation of election rules. Because of his actions, student groups on campus decided it would be best to endorse the other candidate. These endorsements began with College Democrats releasing official endorsements of several candidates by simply listing their names and what seat they were running for. Soon after endorsements came from other student groups, specifically- Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, Initiative for Clean Energy, Progressive Student Alliance, LGBTies, and the historically black sororities and fraternities- in support of Mitchell's opponent. In response to these endorsements, the College Republicans released the following statement:
"We are not making this endorsement as a response to individual endorsements of his opponent by the College Democrats, the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, LGBTies, Initiative for Clean Energy, and the Progressive Student Alliance, but rather because ALL of these extremist organizations have endorsed him..."

This was just the beginning of statements made by him and his supporters. Mitchell's campaign became very negative and turned this school election into an attack on all progressive and marginalized students on campus.

On Election Day there was a record turn-out for voting and Nicholas was beaten in a landslide victory.  After the election Mitchell posted on his personal Facebook account “…The pride of pissing off every whacked out liberal group on campus takes away some of the disappointment.”

Mitchell’s behavior during this election was deplorable. His actions created a tense and divisive atmosphere on ETSU’s campus.  He is not willing to listen to or work with groups that have traditionally provided a safe place and a voice for marginalized and progressive students on ETSU’s campus. This is why we think he should not be our voice to the Tennessee Board of Regents.

If you agree with us that Nicholas Mitchell should not be the voice of ALL the students of TBR please sign our petition and share it with your fellow TBR students. .

In solidarity,

Concerned Students at ETSU
