Did you know that there is a proposal to build around 200 houses on the hillside just outside Alton, between the New Odiham Road and Brick Kiln Lane? This is the field you see just as you leave Alton on the Basingstoke Road. It is the field with the diagonal footpath crossing it. You may well have walked across the hill by this route. You may have paused and looked back at the town and enjoyed the view. It seems unthinkable that part of Alton’s landscape could be taken from us, but we could lose this green vista for ever if a currently-proposed building development is approved and goes ahead.

There are plenty of other potential sites for new-builds. However, these are brownfield sites mostly in town and involve building smaller, less profitable dwellings, removing substrate and negotiating smaller spaces. It is far easier and more profitable to build over our hills!

Unless we make our views felt we could lose this natural boundary for Alton. Soon, if the developers get their way, Alton will no longer be a quiet country market town, but yet another conurbation. This would be an appalling loss, both aesthetically and psychologically, and damaging in terms of the inevitable run-off and flooding issues that would ensue. Remember, this hill is above the head of the river Wey.

Please sign to lend your support to protest against the proposal before it is too late.

Thank you for your support.
