According to Mayor Jim Watson's office, the flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam has been flown annually, among some 119 other flags, since 2006 to celebrate each countries national days. The mayor's office has stated that it is the city's policy and is dictated through the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The Vietnamese community here in Ottawa and Canada requests that this policy be revised such that the flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is not flown in the future. The raising of this flag causes distress to the victims of the Vietnam War. At the same time, this flag should not be raised next to the Canadian flag since it represents everything opposite to that of the Canadian flag: freedom, human rights, and peace. Until such time that the government of Vietnam begins to respect its citizens, the Vietnamese-Canadian community strongly urges the mayor's office to not recognize the flag of that government and to not raise their flag to commemorate their "independence day."
In short, this petition demonstrates the support against the raising of the flag of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at City Hall at any point in the future.

The Vietnamese came to Canada decades ago to escape the grasp and oppression of the Vietnamese Communist Regime, who now flies their flag as Vietnam's national flag. We, the free Vietnamese, do not recognize that flag in any way shape or form as it represents the horrific acts against human rights committed and still being committed by the Vietnamese Communist Party in Vietnam.
Mayor Jim Watson has been to many events hosted by the Vietnamese community here in Ottawa where only the Freedom Flag of Vietnam is flown; therefore, he should be aware of the stance that the community he represents takes on this issue. Perhaps he needs a reminder:
This petition is to show the strong opposition by the Vietnamese-Canadian community in the City of Ottawa, across Canada, and around the world against the raising of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam's flag.

Why do'nt you fly the Russian flag to celebrate the independance of Crimea . For the same reason you should not fly the SRVN on the 2nd of September because the SRVN is the result of the invasion of the RVN (South VN) by the DRVN (North VN) in patent violation of the Paris Accord signed and guaranteed by CANADA.
It will be a sad day for Vietnamese-Canadian in Ottawa. The majority of us are boat people who fled the communist regime for freedom and justice. I sincerely hope Mayor Jim Watson try to understand what really represent the Vietnamese-Canadian citizens in Ottawa: Freedom Flag of Vietnam.
Democracy is a luxury item for some people. Everyday people around the world are fighting and dying for this called democracy which we are very fortunate living in. Socialist Republic of Vietnam doesn’t believe in democracy, freedom and human rights. Flying the flag of Socialist Republic of Vietnam at City Hall of Ottawa is against everything that we had fought for and believed in. Democracy comes with a price so don’t take it for granted.
This SRVN's flag brings back to us the horrible emotions and terrible nightmares of the past. We don’t want our children confused by that bloodstained flag. It represents a dictatorship, not the civilized society, no freedom and no human rights.
Until human rights are fully respected in Vietnam, the Vietnamese red flag will continue to represent the communist regime's utter contempt for democratic values that are dear to Canadians. As to "celebrating Vietnam's independence", communist Vietnam's sad and undeniable record of subservience to communist China since the 1950s should perhaps give pause for thought.
The Red Flag with the Yellow Star The Only Official Flag of the True Vietnamese Patriots THE RED FLAG WITH A YELLOW STAR made its debut in the uprising in the South of Viet-Nam against the French colonialists on November 23, 1940. The creator of the red flag with a yellow star in the middle was an ardent patriot named Nguyễn Hữu Tiến, born on March 5, 1901, in Hà-Nam province. He was arrested and executed by the enemy on August 28, 1941, together with his fellow-fighters in the Southern Uprising in Hóc-Môn, in which Nguyễn Thị Minh-Khai, Võ Văn Tần, Hà Huy Tập, etc. took part. The profound sentiments of the author at the time he was creating the National Flag were well-illustrated in his poem: O people with red blood and yellow skin! Unite to fight under the sacred flag of the Nation! Its background is imbued with patriotic blood, Its star bright-yellow, the very skin of our people. Rise now! Heed the pressing call of our country from its soul! Oh! People from all walks of life! Let us all be one, as the one golden star out of its five golden points. Every people, every country has its own national flag. Viet-Nam is an independent, unified, sovereign nation. Its national emblem is the red flag with a yellow star, the symbol of the soul of the country, the heart of the people, the eternal unity and solidarity of the large family of different peoples of Viet-Nam. I am a Canadian youth, born and raised by Vietnamese parents who fled their home country in search of freedom. The acts committed by the Communist Party of Vietnam in the past and in recent years deserves no recognition. As a resident of Ottawa, I do not want to see the flag of the party that tore apart and continues to tear apart my family's home country be flown in my home town.
