Name: Robert Lewis on Oct 24, 2006Comments: Just got off the phone with Collectcorp. Even though I am still in school full time (graduating in April) and am totally willing to pay off my loan, the government insists that these guys call me day and night. They are slapping $15/month on this loan and I think my other one is up to $2500 interest. I don't bother keeping track anymore because it's depressing. I got seriously sick a few years ago but that doesn't stop the student loans. After your grace period there is no mercy. And then when I was ready to resume studies they denied me interest relief until I paid the $2000+ interest. Anyways, suffice to say I hate student loans.Flag

Working in NL as a recent graduate does not offer the highest pay and it's just that much easier to move.Flag

Name: Tina Baker on Oct 24, 2006Comments: I'm attending law school in Ontario. Unfortunately we don't have a law school in Newfoundland so we don't have any choice but to leave home to go to law school. I am hoping to be able to come back home to practice law but my student debt will be nearly one hundred thousand dollars when I graduate next April. Having to repay that is terrifying.Flag

Name: Mike Meaney on Oct 24, 2006Comments: In the life of my student loan, I will pay in excess of 8k. I am lucky to be employed in my field to make the payments, but with a family, knowing I could chop some time off my loan by working and paying taxes here, would allow for a tiny, tiny head start. No one is asking for complete forgiveness, but an educated workforce that pays back 100% of the loan should only be a win-win-win situation.Flag

When i come out i'm going to owe the price of a house. How am i going to be able to start a life when i am going to have to make loan payments of $800 a month. This is just to cover off most of the interest. This is not fair!Flag

The amount that I pay to intersest and what actually comes off my principle is unbelievable. 6 years paying and it seems like it hasn't gone down a bit.......I guess it's off to Mcmurray.Flag

Name: Chris Dillon on Oct 24, 2006Comments: I don't mind paying back $310 a month for 15 years, I borrowed the money so I have to repay it. But when less than half the actual amount counts against the principal, that is PATHETIC. Whether or not that would solve the out migration of young NL workers, who know's, but it would keep alot more here. How about taking care of the people you are suppose to be looking out for instead of milking them for all they are worth. STOP PUNISHING PEOPLE FOR EDUCATING THEMSELVES. LOWER THE INTEREST RATES!!!!!Flag

Name: Greg Byrne on Oct 24, 2006Comments: A break on provincial taxes for Graduate students with loans would accomplish both of your objectives. Reduced interest and the ability to stay in the province to work while paying back student loans. Despite the possibe prospect of lower wages. The only problem I see is any incentive to pay back the loans would be removed, so alot of graduates might might default on their loans due to there being no incentive to pay in the form of interest.Flag
