Name: Jeff Ross on Jan 21, 2013Comments: I support your efforts. I’m in Hackensack. I read Road Warrior Jan. 20 column about this. I recommend you focus on supporting a pedestrian crossing w/crossing gate and flashing train signal at dead-end Williams Ave. Chain link fence should remain to prevent unsafe crossings at Williams Ave. and nearby areas. Fence would have an opening for this pedestrian crossing. I called NJ Transit today and provided this suggestion to them. NJ Transit will get back to me with a response. There is a similar pedestrian crossing in Hackensack (without the chain link fence) at Beech St. and Railroad Ave. I would suggest forgetting about the alternate proposals noted below. 1. Opening stopped train doors on both sides of train. It will be a tough losing fight with NJ Transit, who is adamant this is an unsafe practice. Conductors for Operation Lifesaver, a non-profit group of trainmen, said standard safety protocols don't usually allow doors to open for simultaneous boarding on two sides. 2. Perhaps stopping the train 50 yards before the street access. This does not eliminate safety problems with people illegally crossing the tracks and would still be considered an unsafe impractical practice by NJ Transit. 3. Overpass for crossing over This is an unnecessary, very expensive overkill solution for being able to simply cross one single rail track. 4. Schedule trains with boarding/departing on Teterboro side only and other trains with boarding/departing on Hasbrouck Heights side only This is unrealistic. It still would not solve the pedestrian safety crossing issue. It would also be very expensive w/new boarding area on the Hasbrouck Heights side. It would also face engineering and legal hurdles & problems that may not be easily solved. You can also imagine utter confusion & inconvenience of experienced & inexperienced riders figuring out when/which platforms (Teterboro or Hasbrouck side) to use or rearranging daily schedules to make sure they get on the right train. God forbid one of these trains is late or canceled. That will only add to this confusion and inconvenience. NJ Transit recently identified this location as an unsafe area due to the high number of people that illegally cross their track here. A mutually agreeable solution is needed. They should have had public/passenger input prior to implementing a final solution. Good luck on your efforts.Flag

Name: James Stark on Jan 22, 2013Comments: I use this train every day and will be severely impacted by the fence that is making it impossible for me to ride NJTransit and commute to my job from NYC. Taking the bus to manhattan around 5pm is a nightmare and something i have experience with it. By experience i mean stop and go traffic before the lincoln tunnel for 2-3 hours. That is simply not something i can mentally handle 5 days a week. spending so much time commuting while there is a perfectly good train station yards away from my office blocked by a fence is literally insane.Flag

Name: Carmesina Ochoa on Jan 29, 2013Comments: A better solution would have been for NJ Transit to allow the train to open on both sides of the track. Simple. Safe. Why not do this? It's probably because they want to drive revenue at the Teterboro lot by forcing folks to park there; however, it would take years to offset the cost of the $100k fence. It's a stupid business decision and an even worse decision regarding safety given the incremental safety hazards of walking on Rte 46. NJT should be ashamed.Flag

Name: Rich Siegle on Jan 29, 2013Comments: Thank you Lino Brescia of Hasbrouck Heights for explaining the problem of NJ Transit (NJT) commuters using the Teterboro station. Another possible solution would be to extend Williams Avenue on the west side of the NJT tracks to meet Green Street on the east side of the tracks. The crossing would be a motor vehicle and pedestrian crossing with crossing gate and flashing train signal. This would also provide access to the new Teterboro Landing development which is now being built. (http://www.catellus.com/pdfs/teterbororetailflyer.pdf)Flag
