As part of its so-called efforts to modernise agriculture, the Nigerian Government has said it wants to buy 10 million phones for farmers in the rural areas across the country from March this year. A lot of Nigerians like myself have expressed disappointment over the planned scheme for some of the following reasons: 1. The money can be better spent on our failing infrastructure including power, education, transportation and communication. 2. Most Nigerians already own cellphones: as at august 2012, there were already more than 75 phones for every 100 Nigerians. 3. Phone networks in Nigeria is so bad even in the urban areas that you wonder how these phones will be used in the rural areas where network is a lot worse. 4. How will this scheme be sustained? how will these phones be recharged? Unfortunately this one smells like one of the many projects that have gone bad in the past and only created avenues for looting of public money. Nigerians deserve better, the Government should please put the money to better use. Fellow Nigerians, please sign this petition if you feel how I feel about this.
