NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT SHALL CARE ABOUT EDUCATION
By Dr. James C.Agazie,jamesagazie@yahoo.com,678-886-1613
THERE SHALL BE A GUIDING PHILOSOPHY
Philosophy is knowledge or wisdom that guides behavior. Education is imparting knowledge to both young and adult learners. Education is one of the gravest responsibilities a nation is called upon to shoulder, and if Nigeria cannot provide or guarantee effective education for her citizens, then Nigeria has failed as a nation. We Nigerians are a philosophical people who are endowed with the beauty of healthy ideas, thinking, viewpoints, values, and beliefs. Philosophy works best in a free give-and-take, or live-and-let-live atmosphere.
THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT SHALL CARE ABOUT EDUCATION
·Realizes that no amount of money spent on education in Nigeria shall be considered “too much” because we “Nigerians are too much;” our “children are too much;” our children’s education is extremely valuable; and “our children are too much to be ignored.” Yes, they are.
·Communicates adequately with the university teachers and staff though Vice Chancellors and other responsible bodies; and develops proper grievance procedures to handle gripes and complaints before they escalate
·Respects the university teachers, encourages them, and avoids unnecessary interference/confrontations with the university teaching and non-teaching staff
·Spends at least 30% of oil revenues on education of our people rather than allowing politicians to sink $5,000,000 in non-educational projects (such as malls and vehicles).
·Be transparent and accountable and publicize in Government Gazette all revenues and expenses for all parties to see.
·Builds schools conducive to learning in reputable environments away from farms, violent groups, dirty markets, or busy highways.
·Pays teachers well and in a timely fashion to discourage strife, encourage pedagogue, reward research and student performance.
·Provides teachers with required technology and trainings; each teacher should have a good computer, plus computer training.
·Provides teachers with opportunities to earn the PhD or highest qualification in their fields .
·Provides adequate libraries and access to research facilities.
·Facilitates professors’ writing of textbooks and children’s materials; hires researchers.
·Encourages innovations in education- Teacher use of Technology, Teacher Certifications, Educational Leadership, Race to the Moon, Nigerian Youth Employment Project (NYEP), Student-Administrator-Teacher Association(SAT) Conferences, Teacher Retreats, Nigerian Women’s Excellence in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM), etc
·Prevents Nigeria from rapidly losing her needed manpower through “brain drain” as Nigerian professionals migrate to greener pastures in nations around the world.
·Encourages Diaspora Nigerian professionals overseas to return home and take up the responsibility of teaching and building the nation.
WE SHALL REDUCE POLARIZATION
·Reduce in-fighting between Government and the academic staff.
·Cease frequent closings of schools and ordering teachers back to work as one does small boys without first addressing immediate problems.
·Fund Nigerian universities with adequate Federal, State, and local monies (30% or more).
·Avoid the competition of public and private universities for Government funds
WE SHALL SEPARATE RELIGION FROM EDUCATION
·Focus primarily on the provision of excellent public university education such that wealthy Nigerians would rather send their children to Nigeria’s public schools than pay exorbitant fees for Oxford, Yale, Harvard, Columbia or Cambridge.
·Ensure that parochial, church, or private schools meet certain basic standards.
WE SHALL ENCOURAGE PHILANTHROPY
·Encourage and provide tax incentives for Nigerian billionaires to give to education
·Encourage millionaires to adopt schools
·Encourage successful businessmen/women to support schools programs
·Encourage sponsors for projects such as Teaching In Rural Areas and Education of the Disabled
·Encourage Nigerian businesses to support Entrepreneurships, and Education of the Gifted and Precocious
·Encourage businesses to sponsor Textbooks-For-Each-Child Project; Every Child Is A Winner; Each Child Has A Computer Project, etc.
