    Comments: I am a resident of San Francisco and the ED of LYRIC. LYRIC builds community and inspires positive social change with LGBTQQ youth 24 and under. I have a stake in the Children’s Fund because these are my tax dollars I have a stake in the Children’s Fund because I have responsibility as an advocate As a stakeholder, I must have a voice in the decisions being made about the Children’s Fund including decisions about leadership and decisions about funding priorities As a community partner I have a commitment to all children, youth and their families, as a community leader I stand up for the rights of queer youth o The climate of homophobia in our schools and the lack of school personnel capacity to intervene is unacceptable. Of the over 19K youth in HS, 77% report hearing anti-gay speech in school and 48% report never hearing a teacher or staff person intervene o The prevalence of family rejection of their LGBTQQ children results in queer youth suicide attempts 8.4 times that of their straight peers o Of the 5700 homeless youth in SF, at least 30% or over 1700 are queer youth For 20 years, LYRIC, with the support of the community, has provided community, safety and supports to queer youth. LYRIC’s services have a direct and tangible result in providing queer youth – both younger youth under 17 as well as TAY up to 24 – jobs and job training, youth advocacy – case management, community building – out of school time programming, as well as critical supports to the greater community to build their awareness and capacity to effectively and respectively serve queer youth. We greatly appreciate DCYF’s long-term support to LYRIC. The services funded by DCYF are life sustaining to the youth we serve, and cuts will have a real impact in queer youths lives now and for their futures. LYRIC’s services to TAY are most at risk – services were already cut in FY0809, and the proposed cuts for FY0910 hit TAY services again. The city has an unfilled promise to TAY youth. The funding LYRIC’s received for TAY was only a small down payment on this promise and this is now at risk. The newly formed and funded TAYSF Initiative remains in the budget with some reductions. LYRIC’s cut is to direct employment and case management services. Additionally, our ACCESS work will no longer receive support from DCYF. All of our most vulnerable children, youth and families, including queer youth, have the right to our unwavering commitment to their current health and wellbeing and their future success. I am their advocate. I am depending on you to be their advocate too.

    Comments: Funding for children and family services is drying up across the board - small family foundations are either closing or changing their funding priorities; and city and state money is uncertain at best. Individuals give what they can. This is the time to stand by children and families.
