It has recently come to my attention through working at a grocery store, that food stamps are heavily misused in New York State. It is one's privilege to use food stamps when they are disabled or do not make enough money to support themselves and their family. However, there are many people that have abused this privilege. There are no restrictions on what one can buy when using food stamps which has led to this abuse. I have witnessed myself that a majority of the people who use food stamps are buying things like candy, soda, cake and other sweets, potato chips, beer, crab legs, bulk shrimp, and other expensive things that one DOES NOT need. The food stamps program should have stricter regulations on what those that use them can buy. People should be allowed a certain amount of money for meat, dairy products, fruit, vegetables, and other HEALTHY foods. No one needs donuts, candy or soda. Hard working taxpayers should not have to pay for people to buy what they do not need. If someone wants to eat unhealthy food they should have to buy it themselves. This problem needs to be corrected, because it is unfair to those that work hard for their money, only to have it misused by others.
