Name: Anonymous on Nov 10, 2006Comments: This will be a travesty. When have Native American ever protested. Move forward we shall but there is no reason we can't keep the name CHIEFTAIN. I like the new logo that has the crown over the ancient/gaelic script of "chieftain." Its a leadership symbol, action-oriented, regal - like the placement of the new golden colour alongside of the traditional crimson and black. Hey! NEW CHIEFTAIN might as well add a cool new color to our traditional crimson/black. Isn't the Coat of Arms surrounded in goldFlag

Name: Fr. Jesse Montes, SDB on Nov 12, 2006Comments: Before we started this whole mess I was assured that only the mascot would have to go...we have no legitimate reason for losing the name...well, y es we do: stubborness...and a few persons' campaign who would like to banish a plain old English word to a native-American reservation.Flag

Name: Larry & Janine Crocker on Nov 13, 2006Comments: The word chieftains is synonomous with leaders. When we hear the word, we think of the leaders of any sort of tribe or group. It is also reflective of what we hope our Salesian educated youth will be as adults: leaders. The Crocker family casts it's votes for either the logo with the lion or crown. Either are reflective of chieftains as leaders.Flag

It seems to me that meaning is established by the speaker of the term, it's very clear to me that you honor this term and in way leave it open to interpretation by the logos used.Flag

Name: MICHAEL A. DeORIAN on Nov 13, 2006Comments: THE NAME CHIEFTAIN SHOULD BE KEPT FOR THE SCHOOL. THE EFFORT TO CHANGE THIS IS JUST A MISGUIDED WASTE OF TIME AND EFFORT. I FIND IT ESPECIALLY OFFENSIVE WHEN WE ARE TOLD 'SOMEONE' MIGHT BE OFFENDED. THE SCHOOL WENT THROUGH GREAT LENGTHS TO BRING A PANEL OF POLITICALLY CORRECT AMERICAN 'INDIANS' TO EXPLAIN THE PERCEIVED NEED FOR THIS 'CHANGE'. I BELIEVE SOMEONE HAS BEEN LYING TO US REGARDING THE DRIVE BEHIND THIS CHANGE. THE HEAD OFFICE IN SAN FRANCISCO DOESN'T WANT TO GET INVOLVED SAYING IT IS A RICHMOND PROBLEM. THIS WHOLE IDEA, THE NEED FOR CHANGE IS BASED ON A CONTINUAL STREAM OF LIES. THE IMPLICATION IS THAT AMERICAN 'INDIANS' HAVE THE EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS TO THE WORD 'CHIEFTAIN'. NOTHING CAN BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. IF WE ARE GOING TO BE SO POLITICALLY CORRECT, HOW ABOUT WE REMOVE "UNDER GOD" FROM THE PLEDGE, CHANGE THE NAMES OF SEVERAL STATES, BEAT OURSELVES WITH REEDS, AND WEAR SACK CLOTH. MEA CULPA, MEA CULPA, MEA MAXIMA CULPA..... LIKE HELL !Flag

Name: Richard A. DeOrian on Nov 13, 2006Comments: I whole-heartedly support retaining the name "Chieftain", if not the honored logo. Good taste and civility prevent me from truly expressing my thoughts, in this forum, of those who sold out our school heritage however I suggest a new team name and school motto in case this petition fails. New team name: Salesian Castrati New school motto: Latin equivalent of "Appeasemant in the face of adversity"Flag

Name: C. Wright on Nov 14, 2006Comments: None of the proposed "new mascot" names have been suitable to represent the Salesian family, nor have they been very interesting. Why not work with what we already have, instead of starting from scratch Why not use this change as an opportunit to teach the students about ethics, values and historyFlag
