GOAL: The goal of this petition is to pusuade the Rhode Island government to install a center guardrail on the Newport (Pell) Bridge. RATIONAL: On Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 the hazardous Newport (Pell) Bridge claimed another life. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical examiner. Three other victims were transported via Medevac Flight to area hospitals where at least one died and the others are struggling to survive. One of the primary jobs of government is to protect people from each other. A simple guardrail in the center lane would have prevented this and the dozens of deaths that have occurred in the bridge's history. Given the high winds and the over 600 concrete patches which makes the surface uneven and contributes to the danger. Anyone that has ever crossed the bridge knows of the danger. PLAN: We plan on providing this petition to the state assembly and local radio talk show hosts after receiving 5000 signatures. Please forward the link to all concerned parties. Lastly, we are also demanding that this project is paid for by current funding that the government must cut within their personnel budget. Thank You for your concern.
