Name: Laura Bishop on Feb 23, 2010Comments: This really needs to become a reality. Traffic to both local hospitals is becoming increasingly congested. The current situation is causing stress to expectant mothers at a time when they least need it. Please give Newbury a decent maternity wing in its local area.Flag

Name: MARK WESTALL on Feb 23, 2010Comments: This is a facillity which Newbury should have. Neither Reading or Basingstoke are particularly easy to get to. Considering the recent (and predicted) growth of Newbury and the fact that it's the nearest big town for lots of rural villages in west berks too.Flag

Name: Rosie on Feb 23, 2010Comments: I agree with this 100% its a person right to have a baby where they want.newbury is getting bigger yet still we have such a small useless hospital. This would be a great idea at least then parents can have there babies with no worrying of not getting new in time.what to say if someone had a baby emergency and they could then they could lose there poor baby.We pay council tax and do we see the rewards no its about time we had what we want in newburyFlag

Name: Elizabeth Gillespie on Feb 23, 2010Comments: It makes a great dal of sense finacially and practically to have a maternity unit in Newbury. The Governments aim is to have better maternity care, this will achieve that. It must also be remembered that the birth of a baby is a family affair. There are often other children that have to be taken into account. Making parents be so far from the rest of their family will ahve a downside, especially if the father has to look after the other children, he will not ge tthe time to bond with the new baby. The NHS knows the imporance of paternal bonding so should really be trying to give every baby and family the best start.Flag

Name: Catherine Haines on Feb 23, 2010Comments: Given the difficulties involved with travelling to Basingstoke, Reading or Swindon it is a real necessity to have a maternity facility in West Berkshire. Having the requisite facilities within easy travelling distance would probably enable more people to opt for home births since there would be less risk involved if facilities are readily accessible should the need arise. Not least it means partners and other relations would not have to make a 50 mile round trip when visiting if mum and baby stay in the hospital.Flag

Name: Emma Forson on Feb 23, 2010Comments: There are two issues here in my opinion: 1. The drive to Basingstoke or Reading is frequently hit with delays due to volume of traffic, weather or accidents; these delays can only add to the stress for expectant mothers which may in itself prolong labour. Additionally, mothers may be sent home; not everyone has a driver at their beck and call. 2. I recently gave birth at Basingstoke and due to limited facilities in high demand, I spent 6 hours being moved from room to room with very little support and no examinations / consultations which caused a great deal of distress - I have heard the Reading is at least equally busy and expectant molthers being redirected to other hopsiptals is not uncommon.Flag
