Name: Louise Flynn on Feb 9, 2010Comments: as one of the women who was turned away from both reading and basingstoke hospital when i went into labour on 27th of september 07 i was made to sit in back of ambulance at there base station for 20 minutes whilst the paremedics rang round trying to find me ann available bed. luckily for me one became available in swindon so i did not have to travel to places such as oxford or southampton. swindon is a lovely hospital but women should be able to get into the hospital of there choice. i am 100 percent behind mr David black on this campaigne and hope he actually wins this battleFlag

Name: John Elkington on Feb 9, 2010Comments: Currently my wife is expecting our second child and my wife's third. My stepson was born in Reading and from what I agther my wife's care at the RBH was lacking. My first was born in Basingstoke and although the care was fantastic. I had to sleep in the car in minus 8 oC temperatures after being asked to leave unitl normal visiting hrs which were 4 hrs away after being at the hospital 22 hrs and in not fit state to drive back to Newbury. Our third will also be born at Basingstoke but as I am now self employed this has made it increasingly difficult for my wife to make all her appointments as I am not always available and she cannot drive. It seems ridiculous that a town the size of Newbury/West Berkshire does not have it's own maternity facilities and in our case during my wife's third pregnancy this would of been an invaluable service.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Feb 10, 2010Comments: Newbury really needs a maternity unit. Before the new hospital was built a few years ago, Newbury had two huge hospitals & a maternity facility. Who decided to incorporate both hospitals into a new one SMALLER than both of the old hospitals put together & didn't even bother about building a new maternity facility. I 110% support this campaign!Flag

Name: Naomi Slade on Feb 11, 2010Comments: Giving birth is stressful enough, without being faced with a lengthy journey. My final child was born at home - the midwives ran out of gas and air at a critical point and kept saying 'well, if it all slows down you will have to go to reading' this did nothing to focus the mind and induce relaxation. A local facility is essential in an area such as West Berks which has a very high proportion of growing families.Flag

Name: Audrey Lloyd on Feb 11, 2010Comments: I wholely agree. We had a new hospital built in the town but with no A&E and no maternity. WIth a 30 min drive minimum to the nearest hospital providing either of these in a growing town this is an issue.Flag

Name: Gail on Feb 11, 2010Comments: I also feel passionate about this as I was lucky enough to be able to give birth in Sandleford before its demise. I would never have made it to Reading or anywhere else. It is about time a growing community like Newbury had a basic facility such as a maternity / birth centre.Flag

Name: Julia Jones on Feb 11, 2010Comments: This could be merged with a functioning A & E department. West Berks is no longer just small market towns and villages. The local population is growing at an alarming rate and we need a fully functioning hospital that deals with accidents such as heart attacks and a decent maternity unit.Flag

Name: Samantha McGahan on Feb 11, 2010Comments: I think it's ridiculous that a maternity unit wasn't put in the new Newbury hospital when it was built - very short sighted. In addition to the problems caused by being pregnant and having to travel long distances it's also ecologically unsound if you think about the amount of car trips that have to be taken. The list of reasons Newbury should have a maternity facility is very long.Flag

Name: Colin Tillett on Feb 11, 2010Comments: WBCH is a great place. I have just had the best attention from Mr Constable and his team. (Eyes) As a father and with grown up children, both born at East Surrey Hospital, 10 mins from where we then lived, I am very concerned that there is not a maternity unit for 20 miles from where we now live.Flag

Name: Barbara Coxhead on Feb 12, 2010Comments: with all the houses going up in newbury most of them will be for young people with or want to start familys. the new newbury hospital is a waste of space as it is now ,with all the ground it has it could have more departments to save us the boather of going to reading. as for staff there must some who work at rbh that live newbury way.Flag

Name: Charlotte Gander on Feb 12, 2010Comments: I am a mother of three and also used to co-ordinate Newbury Homebirth Group. I totally agree that Newbury needs its own Maternity facilities that can care for all women even those who might be considered or perceived to have a higher risk of complications. Research has shown that for a healthy mother a planned home birth is safer than hospital. I think many more women would give birth in the safety of their homes if medical facilities were closer should they need or want to transfer in. I believe healthy women with straightforward pregnancies are taking quite a risk when they choose to leave the safety of their homes to travel a long distance into hospital whilst in labour. I recommend everyone make an informed choice about where they give birth and acknowledge that although hospital is perceived to be safe the research shows otherwise, as many victims of the cascading effect of unnecessary intervention or hospital based infection will testify. It would be fantastic if Newbury could really give women the choice that Maternity Matters has promised.Flag

Name: Roger Davies on Feb 12, 2010Comments: I am amazed to see so many people are still having bad experiences over this. My child was born 7 years ago and I can still remember the experience clearly. Unfortunately it was for all the wrong reasons. What should have been a wonderful memory was tainted by the trauma of a trip to Basingstoke on treacherously icy roads on a very early January morning. My wife was sent home only a few hours after the birth, which we agreed to at the time because she hadn’t been given any food all day and all the showers were broken so she hadn’t even been able to wash after the birth. When we did get home my son started to have breathing difficulties. We contacted the Basingstoke hospital who said they couldn’t help us and told us to drive to Reading to get our son checked there. At the time we were too tired and stressed to argue or get cross and just made another Journey on more icy roads. I am still so cross when I think about this and am so pleased a politician is finally taking the trouble to listen to the people of Newbury who seem to be ignored on almost everything these days.Flag

Name: Jenny Austin on Feb 13, 2010Comments: This is a very much needed facility in Newbury. I have seen my daughter having to travel to Reading for the most basic screening. Newbury has grown since I had my children in teh 1970's and I had one of them in Newbury, at Sandleford Hospital. A much more pleasant experience than Royal Berks!Flag
