The General Election is over but I still remain committed to fight for a maternity facility for Newbury. Whatever your political persuasion, I hope that you will join me.
There have been two recent stories which again highlight the need for a midwife led maternity unit at our Community Hospital. Newbury Weekly News reported that one lady had given birth at the Newbury Retail Park on the way to Basingstoke and another gave birth on the M4 as she made her way to Reading. How much simpler if women with uncomplicated births could give birth in Newbury as used to happen when Sandleford was still open on Newtown Road. We really do need this facility back in the town. I want to thank everyone who has already signed this petition. When I decided to highlight the lack of a maternity facility in Newbury in my letter to the Newbury Weekly News back in January, I did not expect such a huge response. Some of your comments in emails and on this petition have been very poignant and I will do my utmost to highlight all the issues that you have raised as we move this campaign forward.
I also want to thank the Mums who have got behind this petition and raised it to the local media.
I am aware that smaller towns, such as Wallingford and Wantage, have midwife led maternity facilities within their own community hospitals. So why has Newbury not got such a facility, especially when the town did have one in the old hospital? We simply want a maternity facility to be re-instated. Newbury had one and it was taken away.
