I am a working mother of two young boys, one 2 and the other nearly 5.  I moved to Lockport and away from my family and friends so that I could achieve my personal and professional goals, while building and helping to support my own family. My oldest son just started Kindergarten and attends a public city school.  My youngest son stays with a friend of mine during the day, and Evan joins him after school.

When I asked the school to provide transportation for my oldest to the sitter's home, I was refused.  I was informed that the location was to close to the school (0.7 mile) and that my 4 year old would have to walk.  Walk alone, as there are no adult volunteers or staff assigned to walk these children to their destination.

My child, and all of the other children that do not have local family or available transportation are asked to walk alone for up to a mile...across several railroad crossings, busy intersections, while risking a possible encounter with unleashed animals, and much worse strangers that may pose a threat.

These children deserve to belong to a district that cares enough to ensure the safety of its children. One that cares enough about what happens to them before and after they leave the school premises, to put forth some effort to protect these young people . The school needs to take responsibility for our children during these few hours, not because we are paying our school taxes, but because we trust these "leaders" with our loved ones, and simply because its THE RIGHT THING TO DO. If a location is not able to be seen from the school, a bus or walking aide should be provided. PLEASE SIGN SO OUR KIDS CAN LEARN EARLY IN LIFE, THAT THEY ARE WORTH MORE THAN THIS!
