As North Carolina voters and your constituents and neighbors, we believe Barack Obama is the best candidate for President in 2008. On May 6, North Carolina spoke loud and clear. We voted for Obama to be our Democratic presidential nominee by a large margin.
Now, it is your turn to commit. As Democrats united by our goal to win back the White House in 2008, it is time for us to come together behind Barack Obama.
Whether you have yet to announce a preference in the presidential nomination race, or have previously endorsed Hillary Clinton, we are asking you to now support Obama.
Obama has expanded the Democratic electorate in every primary or caucus held to date. His appeal among independent voters makes him a strong candidate for the general election. Obama is bringing a wave of young people into the political process that will give the Democratic party a huge boost for the future.
Democratic and independent voters in North Carolina chose Obama on May 6 by a large, 14-point margin. He won our state's primary by 222,859 votes, out of more than 1.5 million votes cast.
Obama has a substantial lead in delegates won through primaries and caucuses. He has won nearly twice as many contests as Clinton. The only way Hillary Clinton could be nominated is if Democratic superdelegates overturned the will of voters in both North Carolina and the rest of the nation.
Do not let this nomination fight continue until our convention in late August. The longer it takes for the superdelegates to come together for Obama, the harder it will be for our party to compete in the fall against Republican nominee John McCain.
We ask you in your roles as unpledged superdelegates to the Democratic National Convention to publicly declare your support for Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination.
