We see that gas prices are soaring to unprecedented levels. Foreign oil companies reap a wave of record profits while the average canadian struggles in the wake. Canadian oil belongs to Canadians. Why are we sending oil to the US for refining? Why do we buy our oil back from the US at a premium? . We should have a say in how the resource is managed and profits distributed. This cannot happen when foreign multinationals control it .
Nationalized oil would relieve prices at the pump and distance us from cartels (OPEC) controlling global oil markets. Arguments against nationalization are based on "free" market trade agreements forged at a time when the US could exploit its partners to the north and south (North American Free Trade Agreement). That time has passed and as we see what free markets have done to the global economy, the time has come to demand control of our most lucrative and finite recourse. For the sake of a secure and prosperous future, give Canadian oil back to Canadians !
“Canada is the only oil and gas producer in the world whose petroleum resources belong to foreign interests , self-sufficient in oil and gas yet we are at the whim of events that take place in Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. It doesn’t have to be this way. The solution is so simple and pragmatic – nationalize the industry for the sake of our nation, its people and future generations.” - Léo-Paul Lauzon, an accounting professor at the Université de Québec à Montréal (UQAM)
