I hereby call for a nationwide taxpayer strike. In response to Congress' shutdown of Government, I propose that all American taxpaying citizens delay paying their taxes until the following demands are met: 1. Salaries of Congressmen shall be determined and altered by direct referendum of their Constituents. 2. The Rules and Regulations governing Congress shall be determined and altered by direct referendum of America's Citizens. 3. Donations to Campaigns for Congressmen shall be limited to 10$ per person, accompanied by the signature of a Citizen residing in their district. 4. Donations to Presidential Campaigns shall be limited to 10$ per person, accompanied by the signature of an American Citizen. 5. Television Networks will be required to provide equal airtime to all candidates who can acquire the signature of 100,000 (Adjusted to size of election and population) supporting citizens, modeled after the British system. 6. Congress shall not spend more than they receive in taxes. Congress shall not make minimum payments on debts but shall pay them off as early as possible. It is nonsensical that any employee should have the power, without oversight or consequence, to set their own pay, benefits, and working conditions. It is debilitating that a tiny minority should be capable of holding our entire government hostage with no workarounds available. It is corrupting that our representatives should spend their time fundraising, not chasing our votes. It is mindless that our representatives should compete on the strength of their bankrolls, not on the strength of their ideas. And it is childish that our government's budgeters should entirely lack any fiscal restraint. This is my proposal to remedy these flaws in our system. Holding an Elected Office should not be a seat of power and privilege, but a duty and an honor. If you wish to participate, talk to your Accountant, Payroll Firm, and/ or Boss to look into the feasibility of diverting your payroll and income taxes into an Escrow account. Citizens of America, Unite! Jules Feiffer cartoon: Nixon is meeting with two protesters. Protesters: "If there is a nationwide consumer strike, and no one buys a new car in 1968, and no one buys a new house in 1968, and no one buys a new appliance in 1968, don't you think you'd have to get out of Vietnam in 1968?" Nixon: "What's wrong with rioting as a form of protest?"
