Comments: While overcrowded classes are not the ideal learning environment for our kids, repeatedly having to start anew in a different school every year or couple of years is worse for their development and progress.

Comments: Many people moved into my neighborhood because it is districted for Creekside. If you want NEW homes to be districted elsewhere, where it can be clearly stated as such in the marketing of those homes, then so be it. But those who were districted for Creekside WHEN they bought their new homes should remain so. It is only reasonable that people expect that the school board and the county will keep their word wrt the districting they were given when they bought their homes. In addition, the promised construction and extensions to Creekside and all schools should be decided and begun before redistricting is put on the table. This is so that there will be no clouding of the two issues, and so that each issue can be given the full attention it deserves. Finally, the School Board and the County need to slow down development and/or REQUIRE that developers provide BOTH land and BUILDINGS/FUNDS for the new schools that are required to educate the new families from which they are profiting. Parkwood may not be as overcrowded as Creekside (40-60% over capacity), but it is also over capacity. And though there are significant concerns about Parkwood facilities, including potential mold issues, sadly enough, Parkwood is not slated for bond money for improvements until Jan 2010. Creekside is a tight-knit school, with a huge percentage of parents involved both in and out of the classroom. It is unfair to break up the family of those who currently attend the school, or their siblings who are currently slated to go to that school. Finally, Durham MUST be long-sighted in their solution to this problem and accept that we need MORE school space for our kids. We do not want a situation where kids are reassigned now (or in the near future), and then in 2 years are reassigned to another school because of issues & impacts that could have been discovered now.

Comments: My daughters are currently in third and fifth grade. Creekside is the third elementary school they have attended. Although my fifth grader is looking forward to moving on the middle school next year, my fervent desire is for my third grader to finish her elementary career at Creekside where she can establish lasting friendhips with her peers in the community. Please don't change the districting and cause her and her classmates to begin rebuilding their circle of friends all over again at an age where learning and practicing appropriate social behavior and beginning to establish a sense of belonging is so critical.

Comments: Even though my children have aged out of Creekside, I agree that the attendance zone should be left as it is now. Long term solutions to the overcrowding need to be explored other than redistricting. Our children need consistency in their school location as one of the pieces leading to their successful education.

Comments: I also believe that the school board should support and instruct the DPS administration to support and work with the charter school community within Durham as a positive way to assist in dealing with overcrowding. Constant redistricting is not the answer -- CHOICE is.

Comments: My husband and I moved to the Fairfield neighborhood in Durham specifically because it was in the Creekside School District. Short of selecting a private school for our rising kindergartener, which is not an option, we feel our choices in Durham Co. for public education outside of Creekside do not offer the same level of quality education, safety or diversity. We ask you to please work with Creekside, the PTA, the city and the community to explore and consider other short and long-term options to redistricting that do exist! Moving children from one over crowded school to another does not solve any problems. South Durham is going to continue to grow. You can't solve the growth problem simply by shuffling children around year after year. The only answer is to build more classrooms using the bond money the people passed on the land Creekside already owns!

Comments: Our son is starting at Creekside in the fall. We recently built a house in Fairfield to be in the Creekside district. We could have moved to Wake County but chose not to due to the instability of the school systems and children constantly being shifted into different schools. Please reconsider your decision to re-draw the attendance zone and support the classroom expansion.

Comments: I am concerned about the possibility of my neighborhood being rezoned to Parkwood Elementary school. My son has excelled in Kindergarten this year at Creekside and I look forward to my younger child having the same experience. While I am a supporter of the public school system, I do not feel that reassignment to a lower performing, overcrowded school is in the best interest of my children. If this were to occur I would be forced to consider other educational opprtunities.

Comments: My son loves the school he attends. Teachers and staff know his name even if they have never taught him. This is the sense of community that provides a stable and positive learning environment for our children and helps them build a healthy self image. I do not want to see my son moved to another school or any of his friends forced to another school. Creekside has a very strong sense of community with parents and teachers dedicated to the education of all students. Any changes made will have a negative impact on our children. I hope Creekside can become an example of how to avoid redistricting and provide our children with a stable learning environment.
