Name: Atherton, Sandra on Sep 5, 2007Business Name: Kukui PlantationBusiness Location Town / Area: HaikuComments: Our Vacation Rental has an owner on site and employs a property manager, maintenance manager, 4 housekeepers on a part time basis of 2 days per week each. In addition we support the business services of a florist, carpet cleaning service, pool service, landscaper service, window service, webmaster, photographer, bookkeeper, CPA, upholsterer, basket maker, fruit stands, and numerous local shops and service providers to the visitor industry. We believe that this grass roots industry will help Maui to stay in the leading worldwide visitor trends of providing alternate accommodations to families who do not wish to stay in hotels. We also believe this industry will help local families to find work in their own communities and help clear road congestion and long commutes for workers. It will require less fuel and less driving time for a large segment of the work force...AND UNLIKE HOTELS THE MONEY STAYS HERE ON ISLAND SUPPORTIN SMALL BUSINESS INSTEAD OF CORPORATE HOTEL CHAINS PROFIT SHEETS. MAYBE THE QUESTION SHOULD BE ASKED ....WHAT DO THE HOTELS DO FOR OUR SMALL ISLAND COMMUNITIES AND WHERE DO THEIR PROFITS END UP I do not see any communities ruined by rentals, and wish to see more facts and proof instead of hot air about vacation rentals being bad for our island.Flag

Who is really working their land Who is really producing It is true, no rentals, but it is a big joke. May be it is time to go with reality. My business is deterioating, as there are hardly any visitors around in the rural area. This hits also the local residents ---- no taxi.Flag

Name: Allen Mann on Sep 13, 2007Business Name: The Catering CompanyBusiness Location Town / Area: WailukuComments: I do alot of business with families that are here for small weddings/reunions and they LOVE that they can stay at a vacation rental as opposed to some cookie cutter resort that would NOT allow them to use the services of an outside vendor such as myself. When I do these caterings it can involve anywhere from just me to a staff of up to 15...obviously all Maui residents, not to mention shopping for the menu items at local business's.Flag

At the very least, shutting down TVR's and B&G's that are not permitted, should be put on hold to allow them due process in obtaining permits.Flag

Why they are dealing with a "situation" that was not a problem in the first place is baffling. Create a reasonable license procedure so vacation rental owners can comply with it.Flag

Name: Anonymous on Sep 28, 2007Business Name: Carl's Taxi -- Haiku TaxiBusiness Location Town / Area: HaikuComments: Driving customers to vacation rentals and retreats was about 25% of my business. Haiku and Huelo had a taxi service they could call and rely on. A taxi was out there. Now with the new development, there is no reason other then to spent the night out here. Business is nearly dead -- killed. So I am forced to sit in line at the cruise ships till they eventually disappear too. This is happening, while I am writing this. This seems to be a Maui way of doing things. First when things happen it is cool, Then when there is a business started everybody is in on it. Then legislation wakes up and regulates, cripels or kills it. The last you then hear is: "Oh, they went to the Big Island". Good luck -- there must be a better way of doing it then the way it is handled now. Much Aloha, Carl's Taxi in HaikuFlag

Name: Bill Garcia on Sep 30, 2007Business Name: Venetian Plasters of HawaiiBusiness Location Town / Area: HaikuComments: Maui's Mayor is extorting the tourist that come here by forceing them to stay in a hotel Which in the end will keep the workng class off these islands since they cant afford the high cost of our hotels. Which leads me to think that the whining GM's from the hotels or owners are behind this. When did we loose the our rights as home owners. It's not the fault of (well it is) the people that someone in government got kick backs to let so many hotels be built and now competition is so stiff that they can't keep their hotels occupiedFlag

Name: John Wheelwright on Oct 1, 2007Business Name: Island Tractor ServiceBusiness Location Town / Area: Kihei, HIComments: Shutting down home vacation rentals is ridiculous. My livelihood is homeowners and many of them rent their homes to visitors who are respectful and care for their homes and neighborhoods. To shut down this one type of housing option to travelers to Maui is short sighted and will hurt our overall economy more than any one expects.Flag

Name: Erlene Harris on Oct 7, 2007Business Name: Word of Mouth CleaningBusiness Location Town / Area: KiheiComments: I work in the vacation rental business as a home cleaner and caretaker. As if this business is shut down it will take my income away. I depend on this to make a living here in Maui. I see it will effect all of Maui's economy. The job's that we have through this business also go back into the economy. I think the mayor is picking on one part of this beautiful islands work force, I think the end result will be really bad for all of Maui. There many people that will be out jobs and lose everything and also the people that own the homes will lose them or dump them for whatever they can get and what will that do to the economyFlag

Name: Richard & Lynda Norman on Jul 9, 2008Business Name: Realty 1 Cleaning ServiceBusiness Location Town / Area: All areas of MauiComments: "KEEP THE MONEY IN MAUI " By fairly regulating the vacation rental industry Maui County would not only benefit by the tax revenues, it would support the local business owners and private residents. The large corporations such as Hyatt and Marriott would still maintain their profits as many vacationers prefer the type of accomodations they offer, also their restaurants will continue to earn revenue from both their own guests as well as people prefering the vacation rental/B&B atmosphere. The large hotels send thir money back to the mainland, the smaller vacation rentals/B&B's keep their money here on Maui , which in turn generates more business for the local community. I recently had a Kula resident comment to me that because the vacation rentals and B&B's have been closed down it has made it harder for him and many other local property owners to rent out their long term rental property because they now are in competition with the vacation rentals and B&B's who have resorted to long term rental for an alternate form of income. Maui needs the diversity that the vacation rental/B&B industry provides as well as the monetary benefits it infuses into our local ecomomy.Flag
