Dear Supervisor Dufty, Please do not be fooled by a bunch of profit-hungry promoters who try to minimize the behavior of a small subset of reggae performers who call for the deaths of LGBT people. Performers like Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Capleton and others have used their music and their stage appearances to call for the burning hanging, and shooting of LGBT people. Promoters like to say that when these performers talk about burning gay people, they mean only a spiritual burning. They haven't yet pretended that the performers are calling for a spiritual hanging, or for the spiritual throwing of acid in gay people's faces. These musicians contribute to a climate of intense hostility for gay people in Jamaica. J-FLAG, the Jamaica Forum of Lesbians, All-Sexuals, and Gays has called for a boycott of the worst of these murder music singers. Gays in Jamaica live in fear due to the attitudes these musicians spread and celebrate. It is not enough that they agree to call for murder only when not in San Francisco; San Franciscans should stand up for the rights of all people. If a singer came to San Francisco after unapologetically calling for the murder of whites, or blacks, or Chinese, or Jews, or Christians, or Muslims, or Buddhists, there would be appropriate and immediate outrage. The attempt by promoters to excuse these singers' call for the death of gays should be met with the same degree of appropriate outrage.
