A lot of people are angered by the American Atheists suing New York and New Jersey over the proposed cross at a 9/11 memorial. I can see why as we are a secular nation, the 1796 Treaty with Tripoli states that the United States was, "not in any sense founded on the Christian religion." This treaty was written during the presidency of George Washington and signed under the presidency of John Adams. They strongly believed that all man of any race or creed is held to the same responsibility as his brother or sister beside him. These men and women that are vilified for not believing in a god are not trying to hate and destroy religion, no these men and women are trying to make sure that no person walks down the street and looks up at that cross and feels threatened by the ever present imagery of a god they do not believe in. That these people don't feel like they have less of a presence in this nation than their brothers and sisters who belong to other faiths. I may not believe in a god but I believe in Jesus's teachings of peace just as I believe in Mohandas Gandhi words, “I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ.” If you are truly a Christian, rather if you are truly a man or woman of any creed you can accept a plea of tolerance because tolerance is universal. You can whine or you can help. If you want all men to be truly equal, than stop trying to stop this, and sign this petition so this is a monument to every man and woman of every creed who died here or as result of not just to Christians. We are not a Christian nation, but I believe we are people with the morality to accept others and help them in our struggle to create a truly equal nation.
