Comments: The amount of fish taken is excessive in the extreme. Just pure greed! This is allowed because mullet stocks are believed to not be in danger yet there is no evidence to back this up. DAFF must take action before it's too late.

Comments: A total disgrace that this allowed governmental bodies wish to monitor fish stock and the impact sea anglers have on the sea then allow this behavior to go on 20,000 fish would take more than a few anglers to catch that amount of fish in a lifetime.

Comments: The use of shore netting and trot lining is an old and out of date way of supplementing winter commercial fishermans income (my family were commercial fisherman until the early 1960s) and the method of supplementing recreational fishermans family diet historically. Although, now it seems to be a means of making money by some unscrupulous none-licenced "recreational" "fisherman". This method has a massive negative consequance (especially for netting) in that nets and trot lines capture Juvenile fish (Bass and Mullet, etc) that will die before collection. Jersey suffers the same problem were narrow gullies are netted -- some times illegally (not marked) leading to all the captured fish dying -- I have seen unattended nets full of dead juvenile Mullet left for several days. I am not supprised by the Isle of Manns lack of response to the said issue as like Jersey it has decided to put all its eggs in one basket (((the finance industry) i used to work in what tax havens were up to and there consequences) www.taxjustice.net))).

Comments: I am appalled at the mindless slaughter of the mullet by netters in the Port Erin and again near Cornaa and Laxey. The growth rate of mullet is extremely slow and this targetting of shoals gathering prior to spawning is utter madness - the mullet have very little commercial value (as witnessed by the fact they were allowed to lie around and go off on the beach). This was catching for catching sake and has done untold damage to the stocks locally - in one tide about 15 years worth of mullet growth destroyed. I was set to come to the Island for several editorial features this year. I think I shall review the situation and promote more sustainable and more conservation minded destinations instead. The fisheries department really need to stamp out this unecessary, inshore netting around the eintire island. I know the department has had success in protecting bass and migratory fish, it needs to be extended a bit further.

Comments: The recently publicised slaugher of mullet in the IOM is a disgrace. The low commercial value of this catch is insignificant when compared with the pleasure that these fish could have given to sport anglers. This unregulated and potentially environmentally damaging selfish practise must be stopped immediately.

Comments: I share the anger of everyone on the uncontrolled Mullet netting. Lobbying should continue for further control and information. Is it not an indictment of DAFF,to admit in Jamie'spost 187 ,that they are historically aware of the netting but have no real information. In the same post, DAFF almost applaud the netters for voluntarily giving information, when they know that it is commercial Surely,if it is accepted as commercial ,then does it not follow that returns should be mandatory and checked. Perhaps as a group we should consider downloading the NMulletC information and sending every MHK/MLC a copy to re-enforce the value of Recreational Angling over the great leaning towards commercial, although i have to admit that over the years that i have given DAFFand Tourism similar information and they never seem to "Grasp the Nettle"
