As of the Fall 2010 semester the University of Michigan requires a mandatory charge of $7.19 to every students semester tuition.  This charge goes to fund the activities of the Michigan Student Assembly.  In the 2011 MSA Election roughly 10% of all students voted, thus showing that as a student organization the Michigan Student Assembly' is not supported by a majority of the student body.   Regardless of whether one supports the work of the Michigan Student Assembly the nature of a mandatory charge is counter to the ideal that one should be free to support or not support, what ever organizations they want.  With this in mind we wish to make the fee for the Michigan Student Assembly optional.  By e-signing this petition one is expressing their discontent for the mandatory nature of this charge, and their belief that this charge should be made optional for all students.
