Since the signing of the Magna Carta everybody has been subject to criminal law. It seems inconceivable that some recently reported claims for expenses made by MPs (especially where no expenses have been incurred) would not be criminally fraudulent either in themselves or as a result of the tax implication. Abrogation of responsibility by blaming others (i.e the fees office) should not be considered when deciding criminal blame. We believe that the Crown Prosecution Service should investigate the worse examples of the expenses scandal and take criminal proceedings where appropriate. We believe that this would be in the public interest as it would help restore confidence in the system by showing the Criminal Justice System to be impartial and able to deter malpractice by those in high public office.
