To Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org Executive Director:

With more than 3 million members, MoveOn plays a vital role not only in shaping public policy, but in educating the American public about the most important political issues of the day. With this power comes a responsibility to engage with these issues in as forthright a manner as possible.

Until now, MoveOn has declined to call for the impeachment of George W. Bush or Dick Cheney, citing a purported lack of interest among its membership. But, as many frustrated members have pointed out, they have not been asked. It has recently come to light that MoveOn is quietly conducting an online poll on the question among a small group of its members. We applaud this encouraging first step but hope that MoveOn will go further by soliciting feedback from its entire membership. When asked why the poll was not taken of all members, a MoveOn organizer explained:

Rarely do we send out a survey like this to the whole membership (we work very hard to send no more than one email to our members per day; the more they receive the less likely they are to open any of them, there is also an issue of bandwidth capabilities). We generally only do that when we have to act immediately or when we are acting on very specific legislation.

We feel confident that the membership of MoveOn will forgive the organization a single e-mail about a question of such urgency and importance. And we would remind MoveOn that specific legislation on impeachment already exists. H Res 333, introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), and cosponsored by Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO) and Rep. Janice Schakowsky (D-IL) calls for the impeachment of Vice-President Cheney on the grounds that he manipulated intelligence "to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify the use of the United States Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq."

Few will dispute that lying the nation into a disastrous war that has claimed the lives of more than 3,000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis rises to the level of "high crimes and misdemeanors" and that these allegations merit serious examination by Congress. On April 28, 2007, Americans in more than 125 locations around the country took to the streets to demonstrate their support for impeachment. That same weekend, delegates to the annual convention of the California Democratic Party, the largest state chapter of the Democratic Party, overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney. Two days later, speaking on NPR, leading antiwar Congressman John Murtha (D-PA) pointedly said that impeachment was "on the table" in Congress.

The time has come for the Bush administration to be held accountable. We respectfully urge MoveOn to exercise leadership on the question of impeachment and to begin an open dialogue with its members about the issue. As MoveOn likes to say, "Every member has a voice."

2451 KathyLillieSeattleWASome Impeachment people came to our August 16, 2007 Moveon peace rally and really blew up the last part of the rally. It was painful because I agree with their cause and doubt much is going to happen until the administration is subjected to impeachment investigations and the truth comes out. It's the only moral thing to do. Go to the U-Tube video of our rally! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2BgXI-upeE MoveOn is Powerful, let's use it for the greatest good, take the high ground, Impeach the criminal administration.
2452 jeffpaulsonkenmoreWAIt is time for MoveOn to take a strong staand regarding impeachment!
2453 JayneRyanKenmoreWAAbsolutely, this our ultimate and only available tool for checks and balances on an out of control Administration. Democrats must step up to the plate on this one -- else they will be forever seen as the party that is both weak and fearful of governing.
2454 AnonymousAnonymouskenmoreWAAmerican people are behind this. We cannot let this administration have complete control over us and possibly the world. Martial law is a good possibility. We cannot support the blue dogs, and DLC. I think it was a mistake to get behind any dems for the last election, rather than work harder at finding better candidates.
2455 AnonymousAnonymousWoodinvilleWAIt is time for impeachment proceedings.

2457 AnonymousAnonymousWAThere comes a time when Impeachment exceeds all other tings in importance. When the peril of our liberty calls for Impeachment as a cure, everything else must be temporarely swept aside...
2458 AnonymousAnonymousWAIt's about time! But better late than never.
2459 MarySchultzKenmoreWAIf we don't put our foot down and demand impeachment of the President who has done more damage to our precious Constitution than any before him, when do we?
2460 ElizabethBrunoBothellWAThis type of abuse of power is the reason the founders gave us impeachment as a remedy. We need to use it NOW. We are in a constitutional crisis.

2466 stephenfiglercambriaCAIt is well PAST time for MoveOn to support impeachment of any or all of Bush, Cheney, and Gonzales. Please move on this now.
2467 LizCoronellaCAOur Constitution is being ignored by this administration. We are on the road to democracy (as Bush has stated, it would be a lot easier). Please support impeachment. It is our only hope to preserve our country as we know it.

2475 MichaelCaugheySanta BarbaraCA"We the people of the United States" have an obligation to uphold the laws of the Constitution of the United States. To do this, we must impeach those who are violating the laws of our Constitution, starting with Bush, Cheney, and Gonzales. If we don't do this soon, then "we the people" will lose our Country. As a member of Moveon, I am asking the the leadership of Moveon to do the right thing and demand the impeachment of Bush, Cheney and Gonzales.

2477 W. DouglasSmithSeattleWAPETITION FOR IMPEACHMENT We hereby petition the House of Representatives for the vigorous pursuit of impeachment for crimes and misdemeanors perpetrated by members of the Bush Administration.  When in defense of the Constitution and unalienable rights as free citizens of the United States of America it is necessary for those citizens to petition action to protect those rights and freedoms, a true crisis must by definition exist.  While this nation wages war on a foreign soil we believe that the greater danger is a sinister internal struggle to usurp the very foundation of our Democracy and representative government.  No external enemy seeking the overthrow of the United States could hope for greater damage to the foundation of this nation than is being committed by the current administration.  Therefore we request that our elected representatives in the Congress immediately undertake or complete investigations of crimes and misdemeanors; and that this include but not be exclusive to the Executive Branch, Department of Justice, the Vice President and the Executive himself George W. Bush.  We believe that these investigations must be conducted transparently to the media and public so that their diligence, thoroughness and findings may be monitored by the citizenry.   We do not take this petition lightly and recognize that this action may impede other important business. However, we believe that those important works will be conducted with greater authority and in fuller measure once the sources of corruption and decay are mitigated.  The critical balance-of-power between the houses of government has been compromised and must not be allowed to continue regardless of the political party controlling the Congress or the Executive branches.   It is true that an enemy threatens the lives of our brave young men and women in military service.  That enemy has proven that it can even harm citizens in the homeland.  This administration has proven incapable of diminishing that threat and by design or incompetence has committed great crimes and misdemeanors against our laws and the constitution threatening the very fabric of our society.  Our strength as a nation against any assault rests in our system of government for, by and of the people.  However great the enemy, the soul of this nation abides in the ideals set forth in our laws and constitution that establish and support our traditions and national character.  These shall not be compromised.   The citizen in a democracy must weigh those events and measures they believe act for or against their interest.  It also falls upon the citizen to inform their representatives of the measures they believe are necessary to protect those interests.  When the threat of a foreign enemy is exceeded by the lack of confidence in leadership; or the moral, ethical and legal turpitude of an official or officials in their government, it is time to take appropriate corrective measures.  By the mechanism defined by law and the Constitution of the United States we seek impeachment of responsible parties. The following acts we set forth as partial evidence of crimes and misdemeanors against the laws and Constitution of the United States and esteemed character of this nation:

2491 JinglesJonesSanta BarbaraCAIt's the SWORN DUTY of Congress to uphold the Constitution. It's not optional and it shouldn't require a public opinion poll to force action.

2494 AnonymousAnonymousOviedoFLAs repugnant as it might be to remove any President from office, we must at least restore checks and balances and curtail the unconstitutional powers claimed by this President.
2495 LoisHamiltonSanta BarbaraCASince nothing will be able to be accomplished in the 110th Congress with this president in power because Bush will either veto or sign off on any Progressive legislation that might make it through these filibustering Senate Republicans, I believe that it is time for MoveOn.Org to add the impeachment issue to their agenda. I am an active MoveOn member and would like to see the entire membership asked this question: Do you think that MoveOn.Org should add the impeachment issue to their agenda? Regardless of whether or not he is actually removed from office, this needs to be done to hold President Bush and Dick Cheney accountable and send a message to future presidents that this kind of abuse of executive power will not be tolerated. Our Constitution is being dragged through the dirt and ignored by this administration!
