To Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org Executive Director:

With more than 3 million members, MoveOn plays a vital role not only in shaping public policy, but in educating the American public about the most important political issues of the day. With this power comes a responsibility to engage with these issues in as forthright a manner as possible.

Until now, MoveOn has declined to call for the impeachment of George W. Bush or Dick Cheney, citing a purported lack of interest among its membership. But, as many frustrated members have pointed out, they have not been asked. It has recently come to light that MoveOn is quietly conducting an online poll on the question among a small group of its members. We applaud this encouraging first step but hope that MoveOn will go further by soliciting feedback from its entire membership. When asked why the poll was not taken of all members, a MoveOn organizer explained:

Rarely do we send out a survey like this to the whole membership (we work very hard to send no more than one email to our members per day; the more they receive the less likely they are to open any of them, there is also an issue of bandwidth capabilities). We generally only do that when we have to act immediately or when we are acting on very specific legislation.

We feel confident that the membership of MoveOn will forgive the organization a single e-mail about a question of such urgency and importance. And we would remind MoveOn that specific legislation on impeachment already exists. H Res 333, introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), and cosponsored by Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO) and Rep. Janice Schakowsky (D-IL) calls for the impeachment of Vice-President Cheney on the grounds that he manipulated intelligence "to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify the use of the United States Armed Forces against the nation of Iraq."

Few will dispute that lying the nation into a disastrous war that has claimed the lives of more than 3,000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis rises to the level of "high crimes and misdemeanors" and that these allegations merit serious examination by Congress. On April 28, 2007, Americans in more than 125 locations around the country took to the streets to demonstrate their support for impeachment. That same weekend, delegates to the annual convention of the California Democratic Party, the largest state chapter of the Democratic Party, overwhelmingly passed a resolution calling for the impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney. Two days later, speaking on NPR, leading antiwar Congressman John Murtha (D-PA) pointedly said that impeachment was "on the table" in Congress.

The time has come for the Bush administration to be held accountable. We respectfully urge MoveOn to exercise leadership on the question of impeachment and to begin an open dialogue with its members about the issue. As MoveOn likes to say, "Every member has a voice."

160 conniest jeanriversideCAI WANT A FULL MEMBER IMPEACHMENT POLL IMMEDIATELY. BUSH AND ROVE WILL BE COMING UP WITH ANOTHER 9/1-TYPE SCARE ANY MINUTE TO AVOID LOSSING CONTROL OF AMERICA TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. YOU'RE INACTION IS VERY SUSPECT. YOU ARE EITHER SIMPLY AFRAID TO LEAD BECAUSE OF INTERNVAL PROBLEMS OR ARE PART OF THE ADMINISTRATIONS MANIPULATION TEAM. BUSH IS DESTROYING AMERICA AND PRETENDING IT'S NO BIG DEAL AND REQUIRES SLOW, PATIENT CONTEMPLATION IS SUICIDAL FOR MOVEON AND THE COUNTRY'S SURVIVAL.
161 chetzebroskiIgnacioCAOur first priority should be to stop the occupation of Iraq, then deal with the current admininstration's illegal behavior. So, I offer this two prong plan: STARVE THE BEAST, THEN IMPEACH!! bumper stickers, fliers, banners, posters, etc. All simple messaging to our representatives and the sleepers among us.
162 AnonymousAnonymousBellevueWAAs a member of MoveOn since 1998, it is time to take action on impeachment. It is the remedy that the constitution gives us for the crimes of the Bush administration. If we do not use it we will be looking at a defeat in 2008. Republicans have set about stealing the next election the way they stole 2000 and 2004 through voter fraud and suppression of the minority votes. We must hold them accountable so they understand that they cannot perputrate another fraud on our constitution and our nation. The people are watching and they do care.

170 Thelda K.FergisonMuncieINThe ONLY way to reinstate the Rule of Law in our country is to investigate and, as appropriate, prosecutive the criminals who have continually placed themselves above the Law of the Land, thus far with absolute impunity. Without accountability, democracy canNOT exist!

178 SuzanneMurphy-LarrondeSarasotaFLit'e either impeach or act NOW on cutting war funding. If this war drags on until Bush leaves and the Democrats win, the Dems will own the war. this is what the Republicans want. But, yes, impeachment is the way to go for Bush and Cheney. Get 'em out. They are a disaster
179 AnonymousAnonymousPittsfordNYThe Founders wrote the impeachment clause into the Constitution for a reason. Why are we so afraid to use it?
180 MichellePaninopoulosIt is time to start being serious about this.

182 CarolMarshMissoulaMTThe Iraqis and our soldiers and the Brits can't wait another two years to end the war and get rid of this criminal administration. No one every deserved impeachment more than Bush and Cheney. NOW IS THE TIME!

184 JacquelineLipskyMiami BeachFLWe need to leave Iraq now. Impeach now,Mr. Bus and Mr. Cheney. we need legislation which will put a time limit on the troops coming home, and that need to start now.
185 Theodore HVoth JrMadisonWIEven if we didn't owe it to our Constitution to impeach Pres Cheney and Bush and remove 'em form office… We know he/they will remain intransigent and uncompromising in the continuance of the war. Sooner or later we're going to have to impeach them because they're going to continue gleefully and with malice aforethought to do all the damage they can to that document– the Constitution. If nothing else, impeachment proceedings will at least slow them down a little. Impeachment and removal is long overdue!

191 P JohnAndersonMountain ViewCAIt's not just about this President. It's about restoring a constitutional presidency.
192 AnonymousAnonymousState CollegePAImpeachment is long, long overdue. If the president and neocons retain the office of president any longer they may actually pull off their plan to usurp the will and freedoms of Americans and the world. Our president and the neocons have squandered the health, wealth and security of our nation for their own personal gain. It is time to impeach not only Bush and Cheney but a long list of cabinet and political appointees.
