| 6 | David Johnston | Several police and SWAT team members on the scene in 1978 have said they are certain a fellow officer shot Officer Ramp by accident. This has been reported by very respected, long-time journalists and others in the Philadelphia area. Several journalists on the scene say that one shot definitely came from across the street, and not from the MOVE home. Some say it set off the whole shooting frenzy.
Nine people can certainly not fire one bullet, especially while blinded by tear gas and standing in 5 feet of water. They can also not have "conspired" to kill for they hardly would expect a violent, deadly siege in response to housing code violations. Yet they have all been charged and served time for this because, as the judge said, "they call themselves a family." I do not think this stretching the law could have possibly occurred if most of the MOVE members were white.
Please do not require them to feel remorse for these literally impossible acts. There is a huge shadow of doubt and admitting guilt would be showing the same level of racism and ignorance of facts that was used in sentencing.
No white person, much less a group of white people, would rot in jail for 30 years for housing violations and one bullet. Especially when the shooter has not been identified.
More time beyond the minimum will certainly open Pennsylvania and all involved up to very real charges of cold, cruel, brutal, and even nonchalant racism.
We have already burnt 11 of the MOVE "family" alive. 60 homes in that low-income neighborhood were destroyed in the fire as well. The only single person to serve time for that was the one adult survivor of the blaze. There IS something criminally about that.
Must this brutal and racially tinged campaign of religious intolerance against MOVE continue into this century? Hopefully not in my Pennsylvania or my America. I hope not.
All they really did was refuse to stop protesting for animals and for clean water in inner-city Philly. Repeatedly being told to "go home n*****s," they simply refused. They stood their ground for the sake of animals and of their neighbors and themselves. This is what they are truly being punished for. BEING "UPPITY." Thinking they could improve and protect the world and the animals and people in it. These causes are trendy now-a-days, especially for young white citizens. Are they still punishable for African Americans?
Will Pennsylvania force these dedicated activists to serve 70 more years? Do they really deserve to die in prison like their sister Merle has already? |

Besides my complete agreement with the petition, I'd just like to add that there is a tremendous precedent for the release of unjustly held prisoners, and that comes from my home state of Illinois, where Governor Ryan issued a moratorium on several Death Row prisoner's executions.
As much as the criminal justice system would like to "save face" and appear incontrovertible, we as participants in a long story of human history must accept that the era we are living in may certainly be more just than previous eras of much more egregious practices of inhumanity against masses of people of color, but it is definitely *not* an era that can be called the resting place of unerring justice.
I will simply ask you to realize that the State of Pennsylvania needs to make a much-needed "adjustment", or correction, if you will, regarding the MOVE 9.
It pains and astonishes me to hear of absolutely decent people who have had to suffer such involuntary sacrifices of their very lives for no good purpose whatsoever. Please release them immediately.
