Name: Alton Brown III on Feb 23, 2004State: SCCountry: USComments: I would like to oppose the proposed development of Morris Island. First, if one walks along the front of Morris Island it is easy to see that the island is disappearing. South of the proposed development, the waves have substantially eroded the 30 foot high dike surrounding the spoil area. This is not a new phenomenon. Second, The half of the shallow bay behind Morris Island is part of the Charleston Harbor Bird Sanctuary. In the winter when few are using this area, Thousands of ducks take refuge here. Increased traffic docks and development will substantially effect this important area. Third, this will effect the views from the Fort Sumter National Monument, Sullivan's Island, the harbor entrance and James Island. Fourth, this section of the island has historical significance. Any development on this island will be washed away left for the taxpayers to clean up. The a conservation group, state or the federal government should purchase this island for the use and enjoyment of the public.Flag

I am sick of seeing them make the efforts of caring, dedicated people who want environmentally responsible land use planning into a joke.Flag

Name: J. Michael Hawkins on Feb 23, 2004State: SCCountry: USComments: I am a life long lowcountry South Carolinian and my family has been resident in the lowcountry for at least 240 years. I am continuously disappointed by my state and local officials who allow/condone unbridled exploitation of our natural environment and historical sites. This may be an insignificant historical site to Mr. Huffman, but not to a true South Carolinian. All the history of my state is significant. Mr. Huffman stated in a recent State paper story on this issue that he would set aside five acres to create a memorial to the island's historical events. Will the public be allowed open access to this memorial. After all, Mr. Huffman is planning an exclusive development.Flag

Name: Ken Howle on Feb 23, 2004State: SCCountry: USComments: Morris Island still remains the burial site of many soldiers--North and South--that fell in the struggle for Charleston. To allow development on these graves is an atrocity. I beg you to protect the land of which FIVE of my direct descendants fought and bled over.Flag
