Dear Representative, Senator, City Council Members & County Commissioners:
We, the people here signed, urge our city, county and state officials to adopt resolutions and laws to HALT executions in Missouri, which are carried out in our names. We call on our elected legislators to in the meantime, study the way capital punishment is administered, evaluate and address Missouri capital punishment system problems, and remedy the process.
We are deeply concerned that innocent people have already been wrongfully convicted, sentenced to death and exonerated. Horribly, some of those people, wrongfully-convicted, have been executed. The death penalty system in Missouri also remains capricious and arbitrary. Location of the crime and trial, race, poverty and the gender—of both the suspected offender and the victim often figure far more prominently in the prosecutor’s decision to seek the death penalty than do the details of the crime.
Copies of this petition will be forwarded to the Governor of Missouri, select members of the Missouri House and Senate, the President of the United States, along with our U.S. Representative and Senators. |
